Best to check with the doc that treats you. But, walking on a treadmill is pretty low impact if you are not going too quickly or on a very steep incline. If you are thinking of buying a treadmill but don't want to because you fear you won't be able to use it due to your knees, try it out at the store and also look into a trial membership at a gym where you can have access to the machine to see how it makes you feel. If you already have access to the treadmill and are just worried it may be bad for your knees, again check with the doc first. Try walking slowly at just the first level above normal incline (a slight incline makes you walk correctly) and see how you feel. If it hurts stop and find a different exercise. Swimming is probably one of the best since that is no impact at all and is a good workout.
