Training him for what? Obedience? Sledding? Simple housebreaking and manners? Agility? Weight pulling?

If it's just housebreaking and manners, you go about it in much the same fashion as you would with a pup of any breed. If it's something else, edit your question and I can be more specific.

I will say, though, that Mals are a very pack-oriented breed. They need to have rules and discipline or they will take over the home. NOT abuse or harsh treatment, but they need to know you are the boss by your attitude and actions. And the pup will most likely challenge your authority as he hits his age of maturity, somewhere between 8 and 18 months of age. You need to let him firmly know you are still the boss.

Look into alpha training, or ask again and I can help with this.

Also, for simple obedience training, Mals bore easily with repetitive exercises. You need to keep one step ahead of them while teaching them simple commands like sit and stay. If you have them sit, release, sit, release a dozen times, you will find your dog wandering away after about the fifth sit, or woo-ing up at you, or spinning in a circle before sitting...because they are bored as they have already done this four times!

Many obedience trainers don't like northern breeds in their classes because of this attitude.

I recently had to put my Malamute down after 14 wonderful years with him. Malamutes are very gentle loving dogs and are great with kids or anyone. They are usually very quiet dogs, they will "talk" to you but otherwise don't bark much at all. Mine howled at fire trucks and hot air balloons but thats about it. They are very intelligent, but shed a LOT. You have to brush them almost every day. They are intimidating due to their wolfish look but mine never showed anger or aggression toward anyone. If you live where it gets hot in the summer make sure to let them indoors and provide plenty of water. They will play for hours in the snow but dislike the hot weather due to their thick coat. Do your research on the breed before you decide. Good Luck!

www.leerburg.com malamutes are dogs first before they are malamutes.....so train them generally the same way you'd train any. This website is probably one of the best there is. The guy trains working dogs.
