i think you meant medical problem as she isn't a medical PERSON so there is no answer to the question
ask her if her underweight is caused by a MEDICAL PERSON!!!!!!!!!!!!! i see you corrected your question so i can now answer
some people are naturally thin
if she has been checked by a doctor don't worry some of the skinniest people i knew as teens are huge now

The only way to find out is if she is seen by a medical doctor. If she has normal eating habits and is losing weight than that might be a sign of a medical condition. She might just have a fast metabolism. When I was 18 I weighed 96 pounds. I wish I still had a fast metabolism....lol

It could very easily just be that she has a high metabolism which is nothing to worry about. I know quite a few people that are extremely slim for that reason regardless of how much they eat.
If you wish to learn more on metabolism you can check out http://www.stanford.edu/group/stanfordbirds/text/essays/Metabolism.html I haven't actually read the entire page but it appears to be very informative.
Hope this helps answer your question.

Some people are just built that way. I have a friend who is so skinny she looks sick sometimes but I have seen her eat a whole t- bone steak a few times and I a much bigger gal than her and I can hardly eat half a steak.

If a person has a body mass index of less than 18.5 they are considered underweight. According to the height/weight info you gave on your friend her body mass index (BMI) is 14.4. She is dangerously underweight. As for a diagnosis, that's for a doctor to do.

Also according to Wiki a person with a BMI of less than 15 their body is considered in starvation mode.

I have a few friends like that. They are lucky in a way, but usually they try to gain weight and they cant too easily. Thats just how they are built, dont worry.

It's possible that she is just built that way.
