i don't think that it is necessaryto have a draft.. what about the people who are willing to serve already it will take away from their experience and their training. i think the voulenteer military is perfectly fine and people will continue to voulenteer i know i will. and if they don't voulenteer and are forced to enlist then they probably are not good for the job.

i don't know where people keep coming up with the draft - sure charlie wrangle thinks there should be one but he's a nutjob. there will be no draft -there doesn't need to be. thank God there are enough patriotic, strong men and women who are willing to protect and serve all American's - even those who treat them like garbage and show no respect for America.

There most likely will not be a draft anytime soon. Unless there is a catastrophic loss of life in the U.S. Military simultaneously on a global scale, the draft is a non option. Further, a draft would not work today because of the Military's "total force" concept. (Read we are too short on active duty personnel that the Reserves and National Guard must be mobilized). During the Vietnam era, one could serve in the National Guard or Reserves to avoid the meat grinder that the Active Duty servicemembers were headed to in Southeast Asia. Today, EVERYONE serves, most likely in Iraq or Afghanistan. Since there is no safe haven for the Senator's and Representative's sons and daughters, Congress will not approve a draft anytime soon.

(1) Sure, a volunteer military is great. You know, though, many contries have "conscription," mandatory military service for 1-2 years. This is part of the draft that should be considered -- whether it's military service or civilian service, too many Americans (me included) have become "me, me, me" and do not think about what their country has done for them.
(2) There is no draft now, and it would be HIGHLY unlikely that a draft woudl be reinstated, unless we are entangled in a large scale ground war. Certainly all the problems with drafted soldiers that you've identified are true.

The "draft" is just legalized government kidnapping. In other countries troops just come in and take men and boys away and force them to join the military, a "draft" is the same thing, it just seems "more legal". I don't care if my answer makes anyone mad, it is the truth. If a draft is ever reinstated, I will be one of the first to protest, I never wanted our troops in Iraq in the first place! The Dictator Bush and his theocratic, McCarthyist, government are out of control, I can't wait til 2008!

I think it should be for somekind of national service, like innercity education programs and such. Too many youth today think that just being born in the USA entitles them to a life of ease, make their butts go to africa and scrounge for water so they can see how good they have it.

Whatever! If the draft were reinstated women should be subject to it also. Equal right from equal responsibilities!
