Mans greatest good has not been achieved and never will, for that goal would be equality in all aspects of life and society.
A higher authority, I don't know It would be hard to believe that there is one, judging on what I have witnessed

Man's greatest good is his spirituality.
God made an arrangement of human government to be of higher authority to man. But God is the 'highest authority.'
Romans 13:1 Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. 2Â Therefore he who opposes the authority has taken a stand against the arrangement of God; those who have taken a stand against it will receive judgment to themselves.
“We must obey God as ruler rather than men.”—Acts 5:29

Man's greatest good is probably empathy.
My higher authority is the universe and all that is. I believe it's all interconnected. I have numerous Gods that are all parts of the whole, or supreme God. My choice of names for deity is just that - a personal choice.

I agree with Socrates. According to him, the greatest good is knowledge and the treasure of knowledge is hidden in man and it can be discovered after thoughtful deliberation. Socrate's emphasis on self-realization was due to his belief that it is the innate knowledge which man cannot disregard. Knowledge alien to him does not have a significant impact on him. Self-realization brings real happiness. Other sources of happiness are not real. If someone acts contrary to his knowledge, it is only transitory just as a clean and holy person happens to soil himself but he does not live with it and cleanses himself at the earliest opportunity. "
I believe in God as first cause in the universe and our higher authority.

To be restored in relationship to God, through spiritual rebirth, is for mans greatest good.
Jesus Christ sit at the right hand of God with all authority. God is the highest authority. There are rulers under Gods authority.

Man's greatest good is his own spirituality. If he's capable of reaching a high enough level, there is no more fear, and he then has the ability to experience complete joy.

There doesn't have to be a higher authority... And why does that concept have to be a "who"? IMO the universe itself is the closest thing and it doesn't even know it.

Man's greatest good is whatever man decides his greatest good is. "Good" is a human concept, and only humans are capable of understanding it (unknown extraterrestrials not withstanding).
Authority, again, a human concept only understood by humans, so only humans have it.
