Many ledgens abound about this and I favor the one that I was brought up with.
Stock cars got their names be cause the first races were called "pure stock" for cars that could be brought from a dealers show room.Over the years the alterations to the cars have made the cars so up scale the don't look like the one you by at a dealer but the name has stuck since there are three stock parts left on the car,The hood,roof,and rear deck are the only stock parts now.

If you're asking about US stock car racing it is

because originally they were "stock" cars

cars that were not upgraded from standard stock in any way

Nowadays it's only the shell that's the same as a standard "stock" car

Because they were originally proper cars brought straight from the showroom. Not this crap the have now, control chassis with a piece a fiberglass clipped on. The best cars are touring cars because they are built from real cars. Lokk at the Australian V8 Supercars and German DTM to see real cars racing and racing on proper circuits as well

It's called what it is because the cars are supposed to be all the same. The idea is to find the best driver not the car, but this has never been the case especially in nascar.
