Aruba is a cool island that is fun to explorer. I rented from a local agency and was definitely worth it. Just watch out of driving through the capital during the afternoon traffic can be bad.

if you plan to do a lot of sightseeing then yes. and get a 4x4 b/c many of Aruba's roads are not yet paved. if you plan to stay at your resort for much of the time i would say just rely on taxis and the local bus. taxis are cheap, flat rate of $6 to travel anywhere on the island. Oranjestad is so small, you could walk it so don't think you'll be traveling far. Aruba is only 19 miles long and 5 miles wide. another fun option is to rent an ATV or moped so you can cruise the streets.

Depending upon your budget and how long you will be on the island, another option is to rent a car for a portion of your visit. You can do your running around and sightseeing while you have the vehicle and just use taxis during the rest of your vacation. We spend nearly all of our time on the beach and travel the island very little so only use taxi to go out to dinner each night. This works out to be cheaper than renting a car.
