I just read a question that asked people of a certain group to defend their beliefs. Some people gave rational answers, but the majority of people gave rude answers and some of the answers were bordering on insane.

If you enjoy these people asking you to defend your beliefs...go for it, answer away. If they incite you in some way, that implies that you need to defend your religion. Trust me you don't. No one needs to defend their religion no matter what it is. What and who you worship is your choice. When someone that you don't know and can't see, says "OK RELIGION X followers defend RELIGION X" That is when you should not say a word.

This forum offers you the opportunity to learn about other religions and ask rational and respectful questions.

Some of the answers I see here would make me run from a variety of religions! YIKES...who wants to be a part of the madness that can be seen here.

Wow, I just found a laptop here in the middle of Antarctica; that's so cool ( LOL Hardy har har, so cool!! Get it? LOL!! ); I hope it works when I press send. Okay, so You want to know why the Good Folk need other People to defend their beliefs eh? Well it's an insecurity about their own belief, even if they've accepted the mind numbing doctrine or the uplifting and liberating structure afforded by organized or independent worship; the perception of what they believe is continually under minded by logic and humanities ability to rational the impossible. This paradox creates the doubt that these People have regardless of their acknowledging this or not. So then by asking another to defend what they believe to be so leads towards a new path of understanding or strengthens the position they themselves have entrenched into their own personal mythology by rejecting or mocking the view of the subject requested to explain them self. Religion is fun! Well the penguins are getting restless so I'm back to the march I guess, I'll have to leave this laptop here because it's not mine; I don't know when I'll be able to answer another one of Your marvelous questions. Oh, the reason I never ask anyone to defend the crazy stuff about God that they believe is I'm a Piegan* and all mysteries have been revealed to me; so I just know ( It's great being me!!! )!!!! Toodles Sugar!!!!!!

I see your point. However I do not respond to these questions with rude answears, rather I answear the question that I was asked. Is there really a reson why I should not answear? Should I answear all of the other questions then avoid answearing that one? But I do think that if your going to say something like "your ugly" then you need to grow up, because you just as bad as the asker. I don't care what religon you are, as long as you treat people and the enverment with respect and follow the laws like evey one else. Good question.

Lady... did anyone ever tell you that you're a killjoy? THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THAT QUESTION WAS TO INCITE YOU TO... oh what's my word?... ANSWER IT! People enjoy arguing over stuff here that, for the most part, many of them would not do in person. "Defend your beliefs" registers in my head as "argue constructively with me." Those that decide to put an answer down can put down ANYTHING they want. Did you see where the fun part came in?... thought so. And not just another really useful tool that nobody is allowed to play with (playing with the wrong tools can get you sent to hell according to some religions). If you disagree with any of what I just said- in the future I would suggest that when you find something on here that you find distasteful... DON'T CLICK ON IT!

I can't speak for anyone else but as to why I might defend my beliefs the reason is twofold.

1 Peter 3:15 but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; 16 yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

The Bible commands it, along with telling you how to do it unlike some of the answers that you have described. And secondly because Jesus told us to tell the world about Him so if anyone has a serious question I'm happy to give them a serious answer.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

i could recite the Apostles Creed (that's the precis of what we Catholics have faith in) i've got faith in God, the father almighty, author of heaven and earth. i've got faith in Jesus Christ, God's in basic terms Son, our Lord, who replaced into conceived by using the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, replaced into crucified, died, and replaced into buried; he descended to the lifeless. on the 0.33 day he rose returned; he ascended into heaven, he's seated on the excellent hand of the father, and he will come back to choose the living and the lifeless. i've got faith interior the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the physique, and the existence eternal. AMEN. the project of explaining "why i'm a Catholic" is that there are 10000 motives all amounting to a minimum of one reason: that Catholicism is real. i'd desire to fill all my area with separate sentences each commencing up with the words, "it is the only factor that . . ." As, working example, (a million) it is the only factor that relatively prevents a sin from being a secret. (2) it is the only factor wherein the stronger can't be stronger; interior the experience of supercilious. (3) it is the only factor that frees a guy from the degrading slavery of being a toddler of his age. (4) it is the only factor that talks as though it have been the certainty; as though it have been a real messenger refusing to tamper with a real message. (5) it is the only variety of Christianity that relatively includes each variety of guy; even the best guy. (6) it is the only super attempt to alter the international from the interior; working via wills and not regulations; etc. Or i could cope with the situation in my view and describe my own conversion; yet I take place to have a sturdy feeling that this technique makes the employer look plenty smaller than it relatively is.

Well said, sister. From my observations, it usually falls somewhere between self-righteousness and narcissistic personality disorder. But sometimes it can be attributed to good people who are just gullible enough to get suckered into it, or who haven't yet thought through their own beliefs well enough. Goodness is not directly related to intelligence (for which I personally have much to be thankful for lol) Be as merciful as you are insightful, and the world is your oyster!

I respectfully disagree. I've come to think that religion is a problem, and it persists exactly because we afford it SO MUCH respect. Religious people should be expected to scientifically defend such absurdities as virgin birth and a 6,000 year old universe.

I think a lot of people love to antagonize and many here thrive on confrontation. I've even been guilty of this.
