This goes back to the pack instinct. Submissive dogs would tear off some of the kill and take it away so they wouldn't be challenged by the dominant dogs. Sometimes it will go away with age, as puppies usually exhibit this behavior but older "only" dogs (1 dog households) will often outgrow it.

Maybe they don't like where the bowl is placed. Perhaps they feel a need to be able to see more while they eat. My dogs eat straight from the bowl, but I feed them in their kennels so they don't argue over bowls.

My newfoundland does this too! He walks to the entry rug, eats and slobbers all over it, and then goes back for more. I don't get it either! I 've tried moving his bowl around, he doesn't care.

You know, I found that very interesting too. I have two dogs and one is very spunky and energetic and she eats her food over her bowl and my other is very timid and he eats his food out in the living room away from his bowl. Very wierd!! The energetic one is more dominant too maybe that has something to do with it. I dunno! They are interesting animals.
