I just read a question about 'dyspraxia' which I've never heard of before, but my 8 year old son has some of these symptons. I know he has severe dyslexic tendencies (some symptons of which are similar to those described for dyspraxia - some described he has none at all) - should I worry?. Who should I talk to?

You should consult your school psychologist, not a physician. This is an educational concern, not a medical one. Some school systems lump all of these disorders (i.e., dyslexia, dyspraxia, etc) into one broad category, specific learning disability. If he has dyslexic tendencies, has he been evaluated to see if he qualifies for special services? If so, the evaluation results should give you insight into his strengths and weaknesses and lead you to your answer. If not, request an evaluation through your school system, it's free of charge and though it can be a lengthy process, once it's done, you will know whether or not your child has a significant problem. Once he's diagnosed, the school will develop an Individual Education Plan for your son that will outline his needs and what needs to be done to address those needs. As far as worrying goes...everybody learns differently and the school system likes to teach everyone in the same manner because it's more economical and easier to do that. But everyone doesn't learn well the way the school system teaches and it's the school system's responsibility to find the way your child learns best. I'm sure they know the answers you are looking for. He may learn differently, but he can learn and he will learn. Many people have dyslexia or dyspraxia and are very successful. Of course you're going to worry, he's your baby and parents worry about their babies all the time. But this is not something that is fatal, like a lot of cancers, or AIDS. This is treatable. Just keep working with him and encouraging him and loving him and he's going to be fine.
