My friend and I want to split the cost of a graphic software (ie PSP, PS, PSE - we're undecided) - what I want to know is, can we share the same serial number? Will it work on two different PCs, or will I have access to her files and vice versa? Can we share the serial number with other friends? Is it illegal?
What exactly IS the deal with serial numbers?

it depends on the license, and most personal software are only 1 user per license/serial number.

Serial numbers are to let the company know ,that YOU are hte owner of the program. That way if you need support, they can see that you are an owner and provide you with help. Should the softrware screw up your system for some reason, they can help you debug it.

so no, what you plan on doing would be considered illegal.

Also, if your software requires a patch, it will automatically log in while you're on the net, and the company can track to see how many "copies" are in active use...and then render your serial number thereby your program useless.

While the two of you can both technically own the license (serial number), you may have difficulty installing it on more than one computer if the software must be activated via registration. Additionally, yes it is illegal to distribute the license to friends. This is essentially in the same vein as sharing music on a P2P site from a cd that you bought. While you own the license to the individual cd, your rights are limited and restricted.

The general rule is one serial number per computer installation. However, there may be exceptions depending on the developers terms of use agreement.

Some software, such as Microsoft Office 2003, will allow installations up to 3 computers with the same serial number. If you have volume license keys you can also install on multiple computers.

So again, check with the developer of the application to see what is allowed.
