i know really stupid, old question, but i have a problem with being to staight forword, so i'm wondering if theres some other way i'm supposed to go about asking

Ohh, I don't think it's a good idea to do that ever. Look if the guy does like you, he'll sooner or later find a way for you to know it. If he doesn't, do ya really want that big of a wimp for a boyfriend? Another point is that, trust me, guys have a built-in radar system for picking up on girls who are afterTHEM, and if it's a certain type of guy, he'll use that as a string to dangle you on, leading you on a little bit, and then playing head games with you.
Just be friendly when you see him. Act cheerful and good humored, and confident - in fact just like the kind of girl any guy would love to be "his". Try to be exactly the kind of girl that you'd like your brother to have as a girlfriend - But don't EVER act "needy". You want a guy who will treat you as an equal, remember - not as a door mat lol.

You could try asking him out, however even if he says yes, doesn't mean he likes you.
Do NOT send someone else to ask or anything like that, a lot of people do not like that.. it shows you can't be up front and honest, so how could you in a relationship.
Become straight forward.. ask him straight up.. don't rush it out.. don't choke or ramble.. simply when you're talking to him at one of those moments where things are getting really tense, tell him you like him and you want to know he he feels the same way.
Do not rush into something after you say it, say it and then wait for an answer, simple as that.
You could also try email, or a letter, however those are testy.. wrong hands and not face to face you can't see reactions.

You'll never know for sure unless you ask but there are other ways of telling:
Does he seek your company, does he stop talking to his mates and looks at you when you walk by, give him your phone number and see if he calls, ask him to go for a coffee with you if he makes excuses then forget it.

just ask your friend to if they refuse go up to him and say"this is hard but i like you and your guy i wanna be with.theres about 50,000 differnt guys out there but i chose you."
