Trust me NO YOU DON'T, having been incarcerated for a period of time I can say the danger alone that you are exposed to is not worth the risk in gaining insight

I'll add that "playing" inmate like being held in a cell for a few days is nothing like the actual experience, jail is DANGEROUS becuase it's full of criminals, I was 17 (30 years ago) and got caught with drugs while on probation for the same thing, I was in county 3 1/2 months had to be transferred multiple times after fighting to protect my you know what so trust me this ain't a good idea

I've had another day to think about this and I might have a viable solution,
1. Yell a racial epithet at a minority group and stand there and see what happens
2. Shower at a "men's bath House"
3. Eat only at homeless shelters for a weeks on end
4. Allow yourself to be sodomized
5. Dis-associate with all your family & friends and abandon all forms of communication except letter writing and 1 phone call per week call collect and only speak 15 minutes for the next year
6. Tell a cop your carrying drugs up your rectum so you can be strip searched
7. Stop cleaning your home and stop doing laundry until your place smells of sweat and urine
8. Keep the volume on your TV at top volume 16 hours per day but only watch games shows, soap operas, and other mind numbing shows nothing intellectual allowed, when not wanting to watch TV it still has to stay on and then try reading a book

Start with these and let me know how you do, if you want I'll give you more suggestions next year when you end this first experiment

Across the country jails and prisons are filled with people who need to be there and who don't get any choice about doing it "to know what it's like" or for the experience. What you are asking won't give you the real feeling because you will remain in control, you have the "Get Out of Jail Free" card in your pocket and that makes a difference. Moreover, no one with any common sense is going to cooperate because letting you live out your idea just takes a bed and a meal from someone who needs to be locked up. If you want to pursue this, pick your two biggest and meanest friends and tell them you want to be locked up for a week and to not let you out no matter what you say.

Jails and prisons wont allow this due to the safety issues that surround the idea. Your idea isn't the first. A program called scared straight was introduced some time ago. But for the most part, all "actors" were ex-cons who were released from the system. There is a risk of being killed and/or raped or beat down. To many liability issues.

I so blame this on the media. With the way the media glorfies jails and prisons, it's no wonder young people are infatuated with them. To answer your question, there is basically no way to do this except to commit a serious illegal act. Jail and Prison is no joke and I will caution you to re-think this out. This was actually tried once as a college project and there is a movie out about it, but darned if I can think of the name of it. I believe several of the Students tried to commit suicide. I have to say i had a kids ask me this same question one time and I cautioned him against it, but after persistence I told him to walk to the nearest police station and smash the front window and just stand there. When the boys in blue come out, tell them you want to be arrested. I'm sure they will ablige you. He didn't do it and you shouldn't either of course, but it's the fastest way to get arrested that I know of. trust me, find another project to do and forget about this, you will thank me one day!

wow, thats not kool but if you insist I guess the first step you probably wanna take is to break the law......good luck. But if I can segest something its not going to be fun it's not an award to go to jail or prison. I have an idea that might work why not insted of going to jail or prison you could always go visit a jail and the prisoners might would tell you what it was like to be in there.

Let me tell you it sucks. You have to eat when they say and make your bed and get up when they say. Can't watch tv I mean it is on but too loud. People yell out all night long. I spent less than 8 hours in jail and know for a fact I don't want to go back.

Ummm...I don't think they would allow that. But you can go on a jail walk through. I live in NY as well and I did it few years back(maximum security prison)...trust me, after that, you will change ur mind about wanting to spend anytime there.

Why on earth does anyone, in right mind, WANT to go to jail?
That said, I must admit I'm fascinated in giving it a try myself!
Are we seeking attention: you know, getting cuffed; led in the place; strip searched; our own clothes replaced by prison issue and taken off to a cell?
Who knows?

Good Luck!

Talk to the cops in your area and see if you can work out a deal with them.

Ask some newspaper to sponser this idea. They'd do the talking for you. You could write about it when you're done.
