Just make the kid sit down every time they get up. If you give up the kid wins.

Take him to karate classes (or kung-fu, tae kwan do). Learning a martial art is also learning a discipline. Sometimes anxiety disorders are misdiagnosed as ADD or ADHD. Learning a skill that they can focus on, that is physical, and something they can be good at on their own will definitely help. It will also tire him out a little, burn off the excess energy. He is probably too young to learn tai chi, which is more of a meditation. A more physical martial art would be more suited to a 10 year old but. This would also be an incentive to get work done. No class until the schoolwork gets done. You should take a class or two with him. Let him go for a while first, so he can "teach" you something that he is already better at because he has done it longer. It would give him some power. You should also regulate his diet more. Diet has a large part in kids' behavior. Sometimes diet can contribute to their need for constant stimulation.

Staples? Just Kidding!

Let him play when he gets home for an hour so he can unwind and get the jumpiness out of his system.

Make a chart and reward him for finishing what he needs to finish within the time he needs to finish it. Set a certain time each day for homework and stick to it! Children need a schedule- it keeps things organized for them.

Is he in general overactive? You may want to check the pattern say over a 2 day period and have a talk with your GP. Also read up on ADHD and check whether he is showing signs of anything mentioned there.

set a timer for 10 minutes and thats how long he needs to sit, then let him walk around for 3 - 5 and go back to work for 10 - 15 min. sounds like ADHD, i'm a teacher and this works for my kids. extend the working minutes gradually and shorten the walking mins. then give praise or a treat for accomplishments.
