Literally, it is a "handing on", which refers to the passing down of God's revealed word. In Catholicism, there are two forms of Tradition, Sacred Scripture (the Bible) and Sacred Tradition (that part which is not contained in Sacred Scripture). How was Tradition passed on? It started with the Apostles and what Christ and the Holy Spirit revealed to them. Hope this helps.

For the Christian religion it would be unwritten words passed down from Jesus and the Apostles. (New Testament)
Jew's it is the unwritten religion's code and doctrine handed down from Moses. (Old Testament)
Moslem's, the sayings and acts attributed to Mohammed, not in the Koran, but orally transmitted.
Not concerning religion, tradition means: the handing down orally
from generation to generation, stories, beliefs and customs.
Kind of like when a recipe is handed down for generations and each generation savors the recipe an makes it a tradition to make it on holidays. That would be one example.
There is a tradition in my family where the families of each generation have gone hunting in the same area.

Tradition in a religious context is pretty much the customs and rituals that one practices within a religion.
