only give him dog food, or special puppy food.
Dry food for adult dogs, is better than canned food, as they use their teeth, and it prevents cavaties.

No, that is not a sufficient diet for your dog. German Shepherds often have sensitive stomachs. Mine did. My Vet recommended Nature's Recipe Venison and Rice, something about the wild game in the dog food plus the fact that it does not use artificial coloring or toxic preservatives etc and has high quality ingredients, makes it a good brand of food for the breed. I have also heard that Dick Van Patten has a good food out with Duck and maybe a Venison one too. I'd recommend trying this but don't change his food suddenly, mix a bit of dog food into what he is used to eating then gradually increase until it is all the dog food. Also, I had to quit giving my dog cooked bones you can buy in pet stores (splintering and too hard, broke one of her teeth), and rawhides (often bacteria laden, some are preserved with formaldehyde.
What I gave her for treats were peanut butter dog biscuits or other dog biscuits that were hard. I also sometimes gave her a large Kong with some peanut butter and a few treats inside and a huge Nylabone (Gallileo bone) plus large regular Nylabones that were flavored but not edible. When the ends wore down I threw them away.
Many meats aren't good for a GSD, but wild game varieties like Venison often work with them.

Yes, it does sound like he is just trying to incite you to play with him. My gsd`s do the same to me when i am watching the TV. He has to learn though that YOU do not want to play, and you ARE doing the right thing by ignoring him. If you ignore him for long enough he should get the message, If he jumps on you just get up and move somewhere else. You have to be very consistent with this. There is no quick cure for this unless you agree with stronger more aggressive methods which could upset your good relationship with this dog depending on his basic nature. Teaching him the "Leave" or "Off" command could work but also will take time. When you say he gets sufficient physical and mental exercise each day does this involve training in obedience? I mean if I tell my dogs to "leave" or go away they will do so. An adult gsd needs at least 90-120 minutes physical exercise a day including some training for at least 10-15 minutes. If this dog thinks you are "weak" he WILL exploit you and try to manipulate you into playing his game so you must be one step ahead of him all the time and be very firm (but fair) in your approach to him. You say he listens to your commands "almost" all the time. He must listen to your commands ALL and EVERY time. Ask your relative if you can do some training with this dog as this will reinforce your leadership over him. Good Luck.

I do not know if you are trying to feed a natural diet or not but what you are giving is gassy foods. You should just get a good quality dog food and that should take care of the problem.

Gradually cut down on wet dog food and replace with more dry dog food. He is young and if you are giving people food, alot of can dog food it is going to cause his tummy to be upset. Milk will cause gas with diarrhea. Switch to the instant non fat dry milk. I would cut out the potatoes if grease is involved. Eggs are excellent as is tuna in the protein department. But not if eggs are loaded with oil/ margarine. Scramble is better. Tuna about 2-3 times weekly. GOD BLESS YOU! sus04mc@yahoo.com

WOW! those are all very gassy foods! I don't know where you live, but if your dog has allergies, you can get a great kibble for him at any pet supply shop. If he doesn't have allergies, then just switch to a good quality kibble with no corn, or soy or beet pulp..

A lot of dog food has rice in it. I had a dog who got wicked gas whenever he consumed anything with rice in it. Check out your current dog food for what ingredients are in it and remove one ingredient at a time by switching to another brand. Dogs are not human and need a diet made for them. Try to limit "human" food

Feed him a good quality dry puppy food. The canned foods, people foods are not good for the dogs. Quality dry food appropriate for the dog's age is the best for the dog and you.
