Should we be tolerant to other religions/beliefs why or why not? (try not to be stupid)

To be tolerant of another is a show of respect. Showing respect does not necessarily mean you agree with that person or their views. It means you show them the same courtesy that you yourself would like to receive in return.

There is a limit on how tolerant we should be of other religions and cultures (abusing or exploiting the weak and unprotected should never be tolerated). But as a rule, you don't see people getting killed off by the thousands (or millions) due to tolerance so I think tolerance is a good thing mainly for that reason.

Tolerance means accepting the fact that other people have different beliefs and practises. It does not mean: "Everyone's idea is equally good, or valid". It means, however, that I can put my answer here without fearing that you will call me stupid. That would be intolerance.
Tolerance means that I don't object to having a neighbour, co-worker, or co-student that is Muslim, or Sikh, or even Satanist.
Tolerance means not being aggressive toward them.
Tolerance does not mean that I can not defend what I believe to be true in a discussion.
Tolerance does not mean I should never object to a behaviour on your part that I consider to be dangerous for others, or for myself.
Tolerance does not even mean that I can never object to behaviour that annoys me (a lot of noise at night, or a lot of noise all day long).
So accepting differences, but at the same being myself and being allowed to defend my ideas and my interests.
In other words, tolerance is a two-way street.

I used to beleive that tolerance was a good thing... Im atheist.

Im beginning to change my view on that. Why should I be tolerant of a religion that infringes upon my right to live life how I see fit?? Why should I be tolerant of a religion that says it will kill me if I do not accept it as the truth? Why should I be tolerant of people who beleive that the End is Near - and thus could care less about the environment (BUSH Administration)??

Tolerance is over rated.... I fear if I am too tolerant, some muslim will end my life, or some Christian will make a law banning homosexuality and Red Lobster (eating shellfish).

You should be so lucky that some believe in tolerance. Chances are that at one time or another you have pissed someone off well if nobody believed in tolerance you prob would have gotten you *** kicked. Not to mention without tolerence the world would go mad! Also if God had no tolerence or failt in you or people for that matter none of us would exist!

I think we should be tolerant of others' beliefs up to a point. If the belief in question causes harm to others, then it should not be tolerated. If the belief is simply a lifestyle preference that makes a person feel content & satifies something within them, then live & let live.

I am a follower of Christ, and as he said when questioned about going into the home of Mathew the tax collector. A physician does not need to go to the homes of the healthy.
The reason the teachings of Christ spread so rapidly in the beginning was because of the open minded tolerance of others beliefs that the apostles showed to the people they were ministering to. the over lying message of loving your neighbor as well as yourself would imply that you respect your neighbor as well as yourself.
You attract more flies with honey than vinegar. If you truly want people to see things your way you have to let them know that you at least try to see things their way too.

Yes,

As a Christian God's Command is to Love thy neighbor as thy self. It says nothing aboutthat neighbors beliefs or lack of belief.

I am to share the Good News (Gospel) of what Jesus has done for me and all people including those of other beliefs but, I believe the best witness is as St. Augistine said; Share the Gospel at all times and only when absolutely necessary use words. My witness should be my life and my living it. A good life of joy and abundance should never be judgemental, intolerant or hateful but welcoming, tolerant, and loving of others unconditionally with neighborly/brotherly love.

I am tolerant of beliefs that do not result in the believer violating the rights of others. That tends to pare the list down quite a bit, though.

I think most religious group preach tolerance, If not there would be nothing left. Imagine if we killed everybody that we disagreed with. We would be alone, we are all free thinkers and sometimes we disagree and that's no reason for us to go crazy and no tolerate someone or their beliefs
