My boyfriend wants to go for a Saturday day trip to New York, specificially Central Park to see the Christmas tree. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on where I can park that is within walking distance of Central Park that will have open spaces on a Saturday. Also, what would be the best time to arrive in New York on a Saturday, to maybe beat some traffic. Thanks!

do not even try to bring a car into Manhattan-ever but
especially this time of year
there are lots of parking garages but they can run you $10-18 an hour
the city is officially in a gridlock alert
you may find a spot Eventually but you do not want to spend your time circling looking for a space
most of the residential streets are clogged with the few residents that own cars waiting hours for someone to pull out
the metered parking is for 1 hour only
the police patrol to chalk your tires to see if you are there longer than that even if you feed the meter
and the tree is in Rockefeller center not central park
quite a hike from the park
if the weather is bad it will be even worse and the city will be packed with tourists and shoppers especially near the tree
have fun but PLEASE and trust me on this
TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
you want to beat the traffic plan to see the tree before 7a.m. if you drive

I'm not a NYC resident, but I did my research before I drove there for a vacation. But I knew better than to waste my time with trying to find parking. I lived/drove in Seoul, Korea so I know the deal.
I would say park in New Jersey. We stayed in Jersey City, right at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel. You can catch the PATH train to the WTC site, where you can ride the actual subway system even further to anywhere in Manhattan. To get to Central Park would take you about 20 minutes from Jersey City. And the Holland Motel costs 70 dollars for two beds, free parking, and free continental breakfast. You can't beat that.

Well i know that a place that is located by central park is very expensive because many people would like to live there, even a small place would cost somewhere in the thousands but good luck!!

Don't listen to the scare mongers. Driving & parking in Manhattan -- even Christmas week -- is time consuming & expensive, but doable. First of all there are over 450 commercial parking garages in the city; heavily concentrated in midtown, where you are going. If you plan to spend the day budget about $30.00 for parking & arrive early; before 8:00 am. If you park at the Port Authority parking lot around 40-42d St you can do better. If you are patient & willing to cruise, you CAN find a street space; sometimes even on a side street without mters. Sooner or later SOMEONE has to go somewhere & move their car. Bring a bunch of quarters, but beware, many meters have 2 hour limits & parking tickets can be astonomical (my last one was $85.00) Then walk or take the subway to where you want to go. Cent Park is great on Saturdays, but THE Christmas tree is in Rockefeller Center about 10 blocks south of the Park on 5th Ave. This not bad because 5th from the park south to 34th is the best shopping & window shopping street for Christmas. So, you can park at or near the port authority. Take 42d St east across Times Sq. to 5th Ave. & walk up 5th to the Park & see the Christmas best of NY.

Leave your car in 'Jersey and take the train.

If you try parking in the city, you'll end up paying $25-35 a day in a parking garage 10-20 blocks away. Parking garages fill up fast.. not to mention are far away.

Open parking spaces? You've got to be kidding. LOLOLOL.

Traffic will be hectic all day Saturday.. and every other day this Winter.

Park in the outskirts of NYC and take the train.

Finding a street parking spot in NYC is like finding gold under the rainbow.

I've waited HOURS (literally, over 3 hours and 15 minutes) to try to find street parking.. and, that was on a non-holiday weekend.

I think you are crazy for even trying... but you can park on the street on Central Park West, on the Uptown side of the street, almost all the fay from 59th Street all the way to 110th Street.

To 'Beat' the Traffic go at 4 AM

There are many parking garages all over the downtown area, but expect to pay a premium.
