To keep a safe stopping distance. If they have to brake sharply, you need enough time to brake after him without hitting it. Ideal stopping distance in good conditions is 2 seconds, in fog or rain its 4 seconds.

In fog it is difficult to judge distances, the speed of others, and your own speed!
So much more reaction time is necessary and more concentration and room for error.
A great example of this is when you are flying in an aircraft through cloud, there is no sensation of speed at all, because nothing is passing you by! Then when you climb above or out of the clouds, you can see you're travelling at speed again.

If you're too close and the car in front goes off the road and down a cliff, you'll be right behind it and follow in the same path. Just slow down and be very alert.

In fog you cannot see the car in fron clearly, so if they braked and you are too close - you have just caused damage to the front of your car. Plus if youare following them and they drift off the road - you would be following.

following to close is against the law just like yesterday driving in the snow { white out} 1 semi trailer fowling another first semi went off the road the second followed him right into the bush if some room was left between them the second semi would still be on his way

Isn't it obvious? With poor visibility, the car in front may have to brake suddenly (you probably won't see why) & then you'll crash into them.
