Just the the same as you would do for a person..you want to hug him from behind, and push in and up at the base of his rib cage, (the 'V' shaped area) with both hands in a fist...with thumbs toward the body..

You will have to fix your home so that it would be like if you had an toddler crawling around on the floor. Also be extra carefull when dropping things and picking them up quickly. I would rather put my fingers into a dogs mouth, then a cats mouth. I have both. If it is close to the front, and depending on size of dog for number of fingers to stick into his mouth. You can use finger to place behind the object and pull towards you. If in the back of the mouth try using a Popsicle stick to pull it forward and then finger to cup and drag out. This last step may trigger gagging so do it quick. It is easier if you have help with the holding part. It maybe wise to go to vet, ASPCA, animal shelter to get an chart, they may carry something that may be better than the Popsicle stick. This is a procedure where you need to be carefull, just like humans- some dogs may panic, or be scarred and you could be bite. GOD BLESS YOU! sus04mc@yahoo.com

Hi there,
my dog gets into alot and therefore chokes quite often. For me, the best thing to do is open the dogs mouth and just reach for the object. Before I grap the object I have my dog tilting her head down so the object does not accidently fall further down her throat. It all depends on how big your dog is and how comfortable you are sticking you entire hand in the dogs mouth.

pretty much the same concept of the heimlich maneuver you would do on humans. theres probably a small difference but I'm not so sure that would matter if the dog is about to die from choking. Anyway, I'm sure there are things on the interenet too that you could reference if no one else can help you here.

the Heimlich works on dogs too ( OK i can't spell the stupid thing - third try LOL but i can do it ! ) ( second try i copied the one above so it wasn't MY FAULT ! LOL )
but you know i have NEVER heard of a dog choking to death ( the air passages have to be blocked not just obstructed - if you or the dog can make CHOKING SOUNDS you are not going to die it's when the noise STOPS that you worry )

you need to reach down their throat and take out whatever it is they are choking on. Also if it gets to the point they pass out, you can close there mouth, and breath into their nose, and that will force air up into the throat.

If he does put something in his mouth open it up and take it out. Also make sure that their are not little objects around the house that he can eat. (dogs or puppies are like children, and want to see what it is by tasting it.)

There's probably a version of the 'Heimlich Maneuver' for dogs.

my friend's dog (small one) used to choke on his bones...and once it lasted more than usual....they called the vet...and the vet told them to put a spoonful of Vaseline...and it actually worked....he coughed the piece of bone out
