Treatment options for snoring and sleep apnea:

Weight reduction

Avoidance of alcoholic beverages, especially before retiring

Nasal CPAP, in which an appliance forces air at positive pressure into the patient's airway during sleep.

For many patients, this works extremely well and invasive procedures can be avoided. However, many patients cannot tolerate it and seek other treatments.

If a patient cannot tolerate the various masks used with nasal CPAP, a trial using nasal pillows is suggested. For many patients, this seems to be much more comfortable than the masks.

Occasionally, for effective use of nasal CPAP and to improve the nasal airways, surgical straightening of the septum (middle structure) of the nose is necessary.

If nasal dryness and/or bleeding occur with the use of nasal CPAP, applying saline nasal gel inthe nostrils prior to using the device may prevent these problems.

Dr. Hazenfield always recommends using nasal CPAP on a trial basis prior to progressing to invasive procedures.

Diathermy palatal reduction (office procedure effective for both snoring and mild-to-moderate sleep apnea)

Surgically straightening the septum (middle part) of the nose. This usually works well for snoring, and it may be part of the recommended treatment for sleep apnea. Also, it may help the patient better tolerate nasal CPAP.

Removing the tonsils and/or adenoids if enlarged

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (removing the uvula and part of the palate, or back part of the roof of the mouth)

Other surgical procedures on the back portion (base) of tongue or through the neck

"Snoreplasty" or injection of sclerosing agents into the palate (for snoring only)

Implants of struts into soft palate; Pillar™ palatal implants

Laser palatal reduction (for snoring only)

Various dental devices or major surgery on the jaw bones (usually for snoring only)

There is more than 1 cause of snoring but the most common is swelling of the lining of the nose resulting in mouth breathing and snoring. This is rather easily treated with corticosteroid nasal sprays which enjoy a very high rate of success. Many people have heard of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) which is not nearly as common but is a much greater health risk if not treated. OSA is often but not always related to 'weight' at least in the head and neck and OSA requires a sleep study in addition to just an exam which will identify nasal swelling.

Depends on the person. For instance if you are heavy and you snore then you need to lose weight. If you have broken your nose or had surgery on your nose you may have scare tissue that needs to be cleared. (all of these problems my dad had). Lastly you may have something called sleep apnea (spelling??) anyway basically you snore and then stop breathing for a bit. This prevents you from falling into the final stages of sleep. (Are you tired all of the time, take a lot of naps). In this case you have to wear an air pump when you sleep. It goes over your nose and pushes air in. It allows you to sleep and you no longer snore. The sound of the pump is no where near as loud as snoring. (My dad also had this). Hope that helps.

There is a simple type of surgery you can enquire about that removes fatty deposits in the back of your throat. Breatheright nasal strips also help a bit. As do earplugs for your mate.

Temporarily, try "breathe right" strips, they sell them at Wal-mart in the pharmacy aisles. Permanently? you'll need almost $8,000 for a rhinoplasty to fix your nose. I use "breathe right" strips.
