No, sadly enough they have contributed nothing. That is why they are so frustrated. 5 or 6 hundred years ago, they did beautiful artwork. There is a castle in Spain called the Alhambra that was built by the muslims. Other than that, no. Their religion does not allow them to do anything positive.

Not a current society, that's for sure. But we can talk about the ancient Islam, the one that made Spain flourish with arts and science, having the biggest city of Europe and it's biggest library. Remember that during centuries in the territories of Islam Jewish, Christians and Muslims lived together in harmony while we had the inquisition in Europe. It is also worth pointing that all the Greek classics where translated back into our modern languages not from Greek but from Arab, as the biggest library in the world was in Alexandria and most of the wise scholars where in arabs countries while western Europe was going thru the dark middle ages. Muslims invented modern mathematics, studied philosophy...

Yes they did had an open, modern and tolerant society 500 years ago. What made them be as intolerant, fanatic and zealous as we perceive them, I don't know... but it is worth looking at those roots just in case it happens to our society.

Islamic societies have contributed and still contributed very importantly to the world. Some other posters mentioned algebra and architecture. Muslims have also created a wealth of poetry and literature (Rumi, Hafiz, Khayyam, etc.)

Just this year a Muslim (Muhammad Yunus) won the Nobel peace prize for microloans (to alleviate poverty). Orhan Pamuk, also a Muslim, won the Nobel prize in literature this year. In 2005, Mohamed ElBaradei was awarded the Nobel peace prize for his work to keep nuclear energy from being used for non-peaceful purposes. In 2003, Shirin Ebadi, a Muslim woman from Iran, was awarded the Nobel peace prize for her work in democracy and human rights.

Are you serious? Our number system. Arabic numerals. Get it?

Thanks for posting a question that Cletus 'n 'em can go to town on though.

This is like the stupid question racists always ask about what blacks have contributed to our society. Just because YOU only focus on the negatives doesn't mean the positives don't exist

Yes! Not just one but many things were invented by Muslims in the past and even now. It were Muslims who were genious in math, science and astronomy. They were scientists, scholars, mathmaticians, explorers, doctors, etc. In fact, europeans used to go to Muslims for the Muslims were very knowledgeable in arts and sceinces. In history classes at school you learn that christopher columbus was the first person to come to america when there were already indians living here. It was a Muslim explorer Ibn Betuta who came to america first and christopher columbus in fact got his konwledge from ibn betuta. Muslims were extremely educated, curteous and best mannered. No one can deny that if history is actually studied from Muslim authors. Muslims contributed to the society and were leaders in their fields. And the best that is contributed to this modern world is the Holy Qur'an which today many people turn to for guidance and peace! This contribution came from Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) who was the last of the Messengers of Allah (God).

Since I prefer a few sources to just opinions because of prejudice, I'll give you some quick google hits I found. I figured maths, engineering and science were a sure thing in any case-especially um Arabic figures (0-9) :-).

I'm not in favour of religion myself for all sorts of reasons-but prejudice against a people is not acceptable. Be prejudiced against individuals, extremist groups that kill and similar, but not against the people of a religion<-this is what fuels wars. Think about it. Not a clever or well thought out question in my view, which means you won't vote for my answer I know-but which would you rather have? Asslicking in an answer or honesty ;).

Have a good day and I look forward to your next more thoroughly balanced question.

In the Middle Ages, while Europe was mired in superstition and feudal chaos, Baghdad was the intellectual center of the world. It was thee that an army of translators and scholars took the wisdom of the Greeks and combined it with their own cultural traditions to create a scientific, mathematical and philosophical golden age. Their accomplishments were staggering, including the development of modern medicine, chemistry, and algebra. Muslim scientists correctly calculated the circumference of the globe in the tenth century. Muslim musicians introduced the guitar and musical notation to Europe. And Muslim philosophers invented the scientific method and paved the way for the Enlightenment.

At the dawn of the Renaissance, Christian Europe was wearing Persian clothes, singing Arab songs, reading Spanish Muslim philosophy and eating off Mamluk Turkish brassware. This is the story of how Muslims taught Europe to live well and think clearly. It is the story of How Islam Created the Modern World.

Femtochemistry

In 1999, Ahmed H. Zewail received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work in this field.

Zewail’s technique uses flashes of laser light that last for a few femtoseconds. One femtosecond equals one millionth of one billionth of a second (0.000000000000001 second). Femtochemisty is the area of physical chemistry that addresses the short time period in which chemical reactions take place and investigates why some reactions occur but not others. Zewail’s picture-taking technique made possible these investigations. One of the first major discoveries of femtochemistry was that intermediate products that form during chemical reactions differ from the starting and end products. By understanding these molecular dynamics, chemists one day may be able to better control chemical reactions and create new molecules.
