I dont want anyone to get the impression that I am supporting illegal immigrants because I am married to a Meixcan citizen. The two have little to do with one another, the only thing they have in common really is that I have gone through the immigration process and found how hard it is.

Nothing is being shoved down anybodies throat. Just the fear of other cultures, don't forget we are a nation of a variety of cultures blended in this great nation. I grew up in Texas which is a blend of both Spanish culture, German, and European culture. I must agree that there is a vast majority of Mexican movement into this country. But don't blame them, blame the companies who hire them or again blame the lazy a** Americana's who abuse the welfare system and don't work. So your own culture is being threatened, if so how much do you really know what your own culture is..

It can't be shoved down your throat. But the fact that when people go somewhere where they have signs in multiple languages, somehow that offends people, and they feel like it is being shoved down their throat. The fact that someone who is here from another country - lets ignore the legal/illegal point for this question - and they bring their customs that they have grown up with (like tamales for Christmas dinner - not Ham) then they are accused of not assimilating to the American Culture. What in reality what is American culture? American culture is a bunch of diferent cultures blended together. So they listen to tejano/ranchero etc. music, and not country, so they are not assimilating. That is just a difference in what they like.

You may be Jewish and I may be Catholic, so for Christmas I put up a tree, and I celebrate Christ's birth. You as a jewish person, you do not celebrate Christ's birth because you do not believe that he is the son of God, you celebrate Hannukkah, the festival of lights just shows that we are different. You were raised to light a candle each night for 8 days, I was raised to put up a Christmas tree. It translates to the same thing. You, as a Jewish person, go to the store and buy Kosher food, me if I was a hispanic person, I would go to the store and buy maseca. But that doesn't make me a person who doesn't assimilate. It is following traditions that was shown to you by your parents.

Well, that's just capitalism. The people trying to sell their products are just appealing to the Spanish speaking market and it's money.

Like in Chinatown in NYC, the city where I live. Even McDonald's advertises in Chinese there, and in Russian in the Russian parts of town.

What's the big deal.

Besides, "Taco Bell" is an American company, right? Are they cultural traitors or something.

I'll still keep eating Mexican food all the same.

Does it look like Main Street USA quite so much in St Louis as it did 15 years ago?

If you walk outside in your own country and aren't surrounded by your own country's culture, it is noticable.

You can argue all you want, and frankly this isn't the main thing I have against illegals (schools are). Still, historically this is one of the biggest causes of social unrest against immigrants, legal and illegal, over the course of history.

Saying it isn't really there isn't convincing to those who no longer can chat easily with their neighbors or co-workers and can no longer easily share similar thoughts on public transportation with the person next to them.

Change is inevitable, but the change is faster than comfortable, and is heavy on the poverty end, with all of the detriments poverty brings.

No one can force anything on me,not their ways or ideas
and least of all their culture. It is your choice.Just as it is a woman's choice to marry someone of another race. You don't have to like it or accept it.Its a fact and its none of any ones business. But someone should not be ashamed of it either. If I want to celebrate any culture that's my business. But I do think its a personal choice.
Its like the reason a person would support amnesty or "rights for illegals because they are married to a Mexican or in love with one. That's a big reason right there .You cant tell a person who to love .
I am anti illegal I am not anti inter marrying of any races .
Its none of my business .I'm rambling sorry.

It is being shoved down my throat when I drive by McDonalds and the sign is in Spanish. I took a long drive with my husband and we went through quite a few towns. There were towns in which not one friggin word was in English from restaurants to car repair to happenings in the school on the school board. We were having to drive through all of this because of NEW requirements for PROOF of Citizenship and all the documents we had and have used since BIRTH are no longer "acceptable" because of the mass forgery. Anyway.....we were treading in an area we weren't famaliar with and with all the new building and road repair the map was of no help. Ya....try asking for directions then. Just try and find someone who speaks English! Now this isn't in a border state where people sort of expect it.......it's outside of Chicago. Not just alot of Latinos in the town with a sprinkling of other people. No it was Latino...period. From McDonalds to the signs in the Walgreens windows to the grocery stores, to the for sale signs on the empty houses.. Spanish through and through. That's crammed down my throat in my opinion especially when I go to mixed towns and there's Spanish and English. God forbid you're from somewhere else.....coz you wouldn't stand a chance. I don't seem to have a choice in the matter because when people in a town want it English......they are BUSSING IN people that don't even live in the town to fight it!!!! Now mind you.....Illinois has already voted and declared it to be an ENGLISH speaking state and they still can't abide by it. I don't have a choice when it's Spanish on the intercom in Wal-Mart. It's not MY choice when I'm watching the NFL and they put a Spanish commercial on my English channel when they already have their own Spanish NFL station! It's not MY choice when bi-lingual suddenly has changed from the ability to speak 2 languages to "must speak Spanish". You see....it doesn't matter if I speak Greek, mandrin Chinese, Arabic, Polish and Sudanese. No....it's not bi-lingual unless I speak Spanish. It can be Spanish and anything else. Can't be English and anything else. That's not my choice. My husband wanted Cheerios. I went to the store and on the boxes you got a free kids story book. I thought "cool" ....that's nice. But EVERY BOOK ON EVERY BOX , was in Spanish. No English book to be found. So...I chose not to buy Cheerios. Period. I have made the choice to not buy any product that has Spanish on it. And I let the company know. I hope the Latin community has the bucks to keep these businesses going, coz alot of us "English in the US "aren't buying them anymore. It's a choice when I can choose between 2 things....not when it means all or nothing. It's not a choice when immigrants here from another country don't have their group represented. There's no German vs English vs Chinese vs Arabic. No...English or Spanish. Hey....where's the "we're a nation of immigrants"? Why aren't you Spanish dyehards out there fighting for Korean rights? What about "their" language. "Their" culture? Hey...when's the last time you attended a Korean Pride parade or had month after month of "celebrating" Korean holidays? None. Now sorry....but America has always honored and made parts of other cultures a PART of the American culture.....but this Latino, Mexican< Spanish crap is gone beyond choice or anything else. It is CRAMMED DOWN OUR THROATS.

Mexican culture is shoved down the throats of Americans everyday. Everyday when I leave my house and see Mexican flags flying. Every time I have to press 1 to get English. Every time taxes are taken from my check to pay for government documents to be printed in Spanish.
None of those things I have listed have to do with choice. By being in America I have obviously made a choice to be around the English language and the American culture. Of course I can't, because their culture IS shoved down my throat.
