As in color or brand? Red is a more universal wine, but a lot of women I know prefer white. You can find good wines without breaking the bank, for example $10-20. Stay away from the wines on the very bottom shelf at the store cause they're usually the worst.

Do your friend's drink wine on a regular basis? If they don't then they are not going to know what is a good wine and what is a bad wine. I say buy a bottle of 2 buck chuck and party down.

merlots are usually smooth (red), chardonnays are popular (white). cabernets are bold and are usually enjoyed by the wine lover, rieslings are usually sweet and make a good apertif, but not really enjoyable with a meal. while Zinfandels (pink) are for the new wine drinker. champagne is always a winner!

california wines are usually good. buy at the liquor store.go for a mid-prices wine, usually about $15 is a fair price for above average wine. buy something a couple years old. with a real cork!

Depends on what kind of people they are, if I go to my brother-in-laws, I would take beer. If its my sister-in-laws house, I would take wine. If you are a new guest at this friends house..ask them what they would prefer.
