I here everyone now talking about reinstating the draft, and I was wondering, what happens if I want to move to another country when I turn 18? I'm not trying to draftdoge, I just never planned on living in the US all my life. I've always wanted to live in another country, but someone told me that I couldn't or something? Is this true, and how can the US government hold people back from leaving the US? And most people don't want to be drafted, isn't it unfair that there was ever a draft to begin with? I don't think it's very fair to just take people off to fight a war that's totally pointless.

Like someone just posted, it seems VERY unfair and completely against what our country was founded on. And this law says if you're a minister you are automatically excluded from serving in the military. BUT... Why do you have to be a minister to have strong religious beliefs? I mean, if people were forced to fight for the US, they probably woudn't do a good job anyway, because if people want to join the military, they will. And those who don't, won't. But if those who don't want to are forced to, they wouldn't do a good job (probably) anyway because they were forced into it, so why even reinstate it? Yes, people say it won't happen, but it's not something to just scoff at and push away. Even though we try to get rid of problems by forgetting about them, it's not always that easy...

1. They are not reinstating the draft, unless we have another war.
2. It is not unfair that we have a draft, your country protects you, sometimes you have to be called to protect your country
3. It is your perogative to think what you want to about anything in politics, but if your country asks you to serve her it is your responsibility to do so, if you dont like it renounce your citizenship, and move to another country.
4 To respond to your question, Im pretty sure you cannot be drafted while you are residing in another country providing you inform the U.S. embassy in said country, or the U.S. government, but if you have an address in the country you probably would be, because I think the decisions are decided by a local draft board.
5 Either way everything i said is irrelevent because their isnt going to be another draft. by the way i just turnded 18.

You need to get an education it is obvious you know very little about war, politics, or the beliefs of what our nation is founded upon, dont go all to pieces because your obviously scared to death of serving in our military, people are conscripted all the time all around the world, people were conscripted during the second world war in every army, American soldiers all 16 million performed admirably, you will find out your dimwitted psychology does not apply to thing's you dont understand. The average IQ in the military is much higher these days, because of the specialization the military requires, please dont assume that people in the armed forces are stupid, as soon as you leave the army you are guaranteed a good job this attracts many too it, so do some research instead of making extremely ignorant assumptions.

The draft is not a problem, and in my mind it needs to be reinstated, if you lived in almost any other country in the world you would be forced into the military, but please do some research on it.

I am 17 years old, and in a position similar to yours. Although I (probably) will live in the U.S. all my life, I oppose any type of military draft. I am planning to go to college this coming fall, and am curious about whether or not college students will be excused from the draft as well.
As for moving to another country, I am not sure what the laws say. However, I believe they would permit you to move out of the country provided you have not yet been drafted. If the timing is bad, and you are drafted just before you move, I can't help but wonder if they could prohibit the move and force you to serve in the military. Although I do not agree with this, I am afraid that is what the government will do. It has done worse before, and will do so again.
I do not believe the draft will be reinstated, though. I am currently researching this for a speech class, and it seems the draft will not be reinstated until we have a complete change of Congress, because currently only Representative Rangel from N.Y. is supporting a draft. I would not worry too much if I were you.

Politically, the draft is a bombshell. Very few are willing to use it and wont use it unless its needed. If Korea blows up, you can count on a draft.

As for the rest of you, what is wrong with you? When you join the military you dont swear allegience to the President, nor any branch of government. You swear allegience to the Constitution of the United States. Isnt that worth dying for? This country has given us everything yet you shudder when you are asked to give something back. As for the gay guy on this list, sure the rights of homosexuals are being violated by the government. I'm not against gay marriage or any of that stuff. Whats great about this country is that no matter what, we can change. We have the power to vote for our leaders and laws. I will fight and die so that my fellow countrymen can have that power. If your country sounds the call of duty, as a citizen you must answer.

To answer your question, no they cant hold you back, but they may still call your Selective Service number.

people don't realize that in the U.S. men are drafted under the 'selective' service system. that means there is no universal conscription---draftees are categorized and selected because of education, physical ability, morality, intelligence, etc. Even if the draft were reinstated, the chances that somebody like you would be selected are slim. If you are residing in another country, and are still a citizen, you will be required to return to the US if your number is called, it happened all the time. But the US Army has never needed people like you, who are unable or unwilling to fight, and have no sense of heritage or honor.

the 1st area of this question has no longer something to do with the 2d area. it particularly is like asking, "would abortion fighters flee to a distinctive u . s . a . if u . s . reinstated the draft?" Do you mean, "would unlawful immigration supporters illegally to migrate to a distinctive u . s . a . if u . s . reinstated the draft?" some would, some does no longer. Kinda like for the period of Vietnam. Draft-dodging is extra of a private braveness difficulty than an immigration difficulty, i think of.

Why do I get the feeling a lot of the supporters of the draft on this post here are 40+ year old white males?

The USA is not a prison. You want to go to another country though, it is best, first to get yourself a passport. Then check with the appropriate embassy or consulate to see what their immigration regulations are: do you want to just visit - or work - or both. Are you looking for a short term visit (maybe six months or so), then you might need a visa. It all depends on the country you wish to visit - or migrate to. Good luck - and have fun

if you want to leave the USA don't worry about a draft. you will not be required to come back to serve in the military only thing is if you come back for a visit they can get you and force you to go into the military

Well im gay and I thought about moving just because of the rights part. We are both educated professionals and we will be the first drafted due to our professions. So I would say just do it. I will not fight a war that I do not believe in. I would put a bullet in my head before I did anyhting like that to anyone else. BUSH NEEDS IMPEACHED!

I'm not sure what the rules are as far as moving to a new country, but I do agree with your point. It isn't fair to force someone into something they don't agree with. It really contradicts what our country is supposed to stand for. I say if you support a war then fight it yourself.
