Generally yes. BUT, the true formula for success in relationships is to always give others respect (even if you don't respect them) AND insist that others treat you this way as well. If you don't do this, then bullies will perceive you as weak and will try to walk all over you. When this starts to happen, the time to be "nice" has gone out the window.

In order to be accepted or liked you have to make positive deposits into someones emotional bank account, but being kind, helping out, saying something nice, etc. If you only withdraw, but being mean, ugly, etc. you have a negative balance in that person's emotional bank account and they will want nothing to do with you.

If you care to be liked, then you should consider being nice. Only silly groupies like or accept people who choose to be unkind or mean.
Remember, you have a free will. Use it and opt to be someone others can respect and look up to.
Certainly, this is only my opinion.

I consider myself to be a very nice person, but there are plenty out there who don't like me and that's fine. I don't think I am being nice to be liked but to be good to others.

Depends on what you mean by "nice."
You have to like yourself first. If you like yourself, then others will be drawn to you.
Ask yourself - is it important to you what others think of you? If so, why? People who rest their happiness on other people's opinions are invariably unhappy.

Not necessarily, some people seem to like verbal abuse and to be treated shabbily.
