I work full time and I have an outdoor dog. I feel guilty leaving him outdoor during the colder weather even though he has a dog house and blankets. I know dogs acclimate themselves to the weather but he's a pit bull so their hair isn't very long. I can't put him in the garage because its too junky and I'm afraid he'd tear some stuff up or even swallow something he wasn't supposed to. Please, no answers from those high and mighty pet lovers that think pets are people and shouldn't live outdoors. I love my pet too but he's still an animal.

I live in Oklahoma and we have true winters and true summers so if I would have gotten a winter dog I would have had just as much problem during the summer months, ALSO I got my pit because he was abandoned, I didn't go out searching for a pit, I SAVED him. FYI I cleaned out my garage and layed blankets down so thanks to those with genuine advice and for those idiots that had smart comments, you can kiss my ***.

We have had this kind of situation too. we ended up moving him behind one of our old sheds so that he would have more of a block from the wind. Then we blocked off part of the shed so that he couldn't get to the stuff inside and gave him a pet door to get in and out. Then put wood chips on the inside for him. My husband is really into working on his car and doing wood work and stuff, and we have allot of clutter and little nuts and bolts that we worried about. But with blocking that part out, he couldn't get to it. We used a couple pieces of lattice board and nailed reg. poultry fencing to the other side and put that up as a border on the inside. It worked perfect!!

If your garage is quite warmer than the outdoors you could try putting him in a crate with blankets in the garage. That way he cannot hurt himself but he is sheltered from the cold. I don't know where you live so I am not sure of the climate. I am in NW Florida and there are still days I do not put my dogs outside.
Good luck to you.

I don't have an outdoor dog. My dogs stay in the house as they should. I even let them sleep under the blankets if they get cold.

If you are going to have an outside dog you should have picked a better breed that is more naturally accustomed to the harsh elements. A pit bull is NOT naturally suited to be an outdoor dog.

Why don't you clean up your garage so he can stay in there?

You should get him a heated dog house and make sure that he has a heated water bowl too.

Your pet may be an animal, but he wasn't bred for colder temperatures. If you live in a cold climate and insist on an outdoor dog, get one that's bred for it.

Keep the dog inside so he doesn't freeze. It's not good to keep him outside in the winter. If your dog has a LARGE outdoor dog house where with a blanket and his toys, that would work.

When I was a kid our dog lived outside year-round, but dad built a large house for her with his own yard. If your pet doesn't have a dog house, Petco and other pet stores have dog houses at reasonable prices. Keep an on him to make sure he's not cold and has sufficient, clean water during the season. You should feel guilty, very guilty about keeping him outside in the cold.

The ASPCA may consider it animal cruelty. They don't take kindly to dogs without adequate shelter and water during the cold or hot weather

Just make sure they always have access to unfrozen water. I don't know what kind of dog house you have but is it insulated and weatherproof? If so, your dog will be fine! Animals lived outside long before we did!
