Wrong, only the old version will no longer be available after mid January. AVG Free Edition is still available, just update to version 7.5.

It will still be free, you just have to update to 7.5.
All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

AVG Free is still around, it's just a new edition - look for it in the fine print, as the AVG website is strongly promoting the version that you pay for.
The free edition still offers great protection, but is only licensed for private use, and has less bells & whistles.

AVG is still free, and there's no mention on the website of them stopping the virus updates for it. So I don't know where you get your information, but you may wanna check it...

This is news to me. I have AVG and haven't seen anything about it going totally to be paid for. I get the updates now, in fact, it updated just now as I was typing this. Interesting, will have to keep an eye on this as there are thousands of us that have it.

AOL has free antivirus. All you have to do is setup a email address on aol.com and you can get it for free. I have friends who have it and they love it. It automatically updates and everything. Give it a try.
