It wasn't his name. His mother nor anyone who knew him ever called him Jesus. We don't call Confucious,"Charly" or Budda "Bob"

Ok, Siddhartha Gautama was Buddha.

And K'ung Ch'in Chung-ni- K'ung, aka K'ung Fu Tse, was Confucious.

So what's the problem with calling Yeshua Ben Joseph by the name "Jesus?"

mmm...Maybe what is lacking on BOTH sides is HISTORY which most americans HATE, American Jews and Americans period. well let us begin. First Messianic Judaism is a modern Movement, they believe that they are jews, because of Torah not because of a certain creed, The Torah states that there is the same law for the stranger living among you and for you.you might ask your self where does it states this, begin by READING the torah, and stop going to the Temple for just family Heritage. As you begin to read Torah you will notice that those who are non-jew and want to observe Torah fall under the same bracet, in Torah. This is why they call themselves "JEWS" although I can understand the confusion in a modern sense, but if you READ TORAH as you profess you do, you will certainly see this. Another reason there is a divison among Judaism and christianity is it's PAST history, first, modern AMERICAN CHRISTIANITY is not Catholic Christianity, which is the cause of alot of pain and resentment among christains. THERE is ALOT of sincere chrsitians who are finding there JEWISH ROOTS, JESUS was a jewish Rabbi, because of his knowledge in Torah he was recognized as a RABBI,in his time. He was regected for stating to be the son of G-D, in the book of Acts of the NEW TESTAMENT, if you will read the book ,a certain cornilius-a non jew was a worshipper of G-d, meaning that he practice judiasm, now through-out the history of the jews Rabbi's created the tradition of the elders which know is called the Talmud, these tradition caused a division among the jews and non-jew torah observant. JESUS according to the new tesatment writings came to break-down the wall of divison among the jews and non-jewish Torah observant and this is the True message of the NEW TESTAMENT writings.NOW, because the Catholic church took the writings and made there religion upon them, those who donot research believe that christianity is a off-shoot of judaism, when actually it is a sect of judasim, originally called nazarenes. Torah observant non-jews according to Torah after completing the requirements of the LAW can be considered JEWS, so when there is so much hostility against these sect, please keep in mind that they are not the catholic religion. They are actually a unrecognized sect of judiasm. Hope this was helpful and forgive any uncorrect spelling I was speed typing. Shalom in HASHEM. santi

The Greek form of "Yeshua" is Jesus. Greek was a common language in the eastern part of the Roman Empire when Christianity first started up. Since people were comfortable with it, they used it.

The original, Aramaic name of Yeshua ibn Yosuf, the Messiah [PBUH], was later called "Iesus Kristos" by the scribes who wrote their scriptures about His public ministry in Greek, which was the common language among the commercial trade and the masses.

Then much later, the Romans [Septuagint, etc.] translated the Greek name to "Iesus Christus"... and became Anglicized as "Jesus Christ" when the Bible was first translated to English.

Peace be with you.

Jesus is a transliteration of the Greek work iesous, which sounds similar. No doubt, he would have been called by his Greek name as well as his Hebrew name. I imagine the Greek is what stuck, because that is what the new testament is written in.
