We think life’s most important question is “Are you going to heaven when you die?” It is not a question of how good you are, whether you go to church, or how much money you give to charity. God says, in order to go to heaven, you must be born again (John 3:3).
Plan of Salvation: How can we be Born Again?
The plan of salvation is right in the Bible. God gives us His clear plan for being “born again.”
First, we must acknowledge God as the Creator of everything, and accept our humble position in God's creation. "You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created." (Revelation 4:11).
Next, we must realize that we are sinners. “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Because we are sinners, we are condemned to death. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). This includes eternal separation from God.
But God loved each of us so much that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, to bear our sin and die in our place. “God demonstrates His love toward us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). Although we cannot understand how, God said our sins were laid upon Jesus and He died in our place. Jesus became our substitute.
In the Bible, a jailer asked his prisoners, Paul and Silas: “’Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ So they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.’” (Acts 16:30-31).
It’s very clear in the Bible, believe in Jesus as the one who bore your sins, died in your place, was buried, and whom God resurrected. It’s Christ’s blood and resurrection that assures us of everlasting life when we call on Him as our Lord and Savior. "For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." (Romans 10:13). “Whosoever” includes each and every one of us.
Therefore, if you understand that you are a sinner, and you believe that Jesus Christ came as the one and only Redeemer of sin, then you understand the plan of salvation

One should be able to tell by the way you live your life. A Christian can be anyone. You have to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life and follow Him. You can't just say I'm Christian and then live how you want to. That's not gauranteed that you will get into Heaven. Your heart has to right in God's sight. And only God will know that. Basically, you have to live for the Lord and not man (flesh) ... that's how you know a Christian or not.

Don't trust them. People say they are Christians, but it is what they say. I am Catholic that includes Christian. We are not the ones to decide. All who have a religion, any kind, should know this. I know many followers, very -intense-, but take care of what people do and judge them. Similar to what they are telling you. Just because you are Christians does not guarantee going to heaven. You have to follow the commandments, or work for it. Just because a person graduated and received the degree of medicine doctor, engineer, etc. implies to say that he or she is a good in the field. Of course not, he could have been a good student -responsible and dedicated, but he needs to prove it in order to classify him like to passing the professional exams. Same way while we are in this life we need to prove God -our God, we deserve heaven. How? Again, follow the 10 commandments.

What do you mean to say? How do you know if you are going to heaven or not? Well that is a question that only you can answer. If you are a good person, have good thoughts, are fair and impartial, treat everyone with respect, do good deeds you might go to heaven, but really what matters is what is in your heart. And that is why I say only you know the answer to that question. Just because you might look and act nice, it doesn't reserve you a space in heaven. SEARCH YOUR SOUL.

Once you repent of your sins, and trust that Jesus paid for your sins by His death, burial and resurrection; and ask to be forgiven, He FORGIVES the truly repentant heart. As a result, you will find that you old desires change; (for some this is a drastic rapid change overnight, for others it's a slower process; God takes us each at our own pace). According to the Gospel, you are given EVERLASTING LIFE. How long is everlasting? Forever! I do NOT believe this teaching about losing one's Salvation. In the Book of Titus, it says it is IMPOSSIBLE for God to lie. Either He gave us eternal life when He saved us, or He's a liar!
EDIT:
Good works follow as a natural result of Salvation; not to obtain it.

If you love your neighbor as well as yourself, if you do onto others they way you would have them do onto you. If you leave judgment to the Lord. If you forgive others for their wrongs to you. If you live a life of servitude and charity for your fellow man. Then my siblings you are a Christian.
If you condemn your bothers and sisters for their way of life, and you horde riches and the things of the earth for yourself. You know who you serve. I love and pray for you.
I know that I am not a perfect man, and that some of my rants here have been judgmental. I thank the asker of this question for giving me a chance to put it all in perspective.

You will have believed that Jesus died and rose again. You will have placed faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord.
You will not be afraid to confess that you love Him and want to follow Him. You are promised that you WILL be saved when you do.
Evidence that God lives in your life:
You will love God with all your heart and you will love others the way He does. You will have a desire to live in obedience to Christ. You won't be perfect at it--but the desire is there to let Christ live through you to love God and touch the lives of others.

True Religion . . .
PRACTICES LOVE: True worshippers are “no part of the world,” are not divided by race or culture, and display ‘love among themselves.’ (John 13:35; 17:16; Acts 10:34, 35) Rather than killing one another, they are willing to die for one another.—1 John 3:16.
TRUSTS GOD’S WORD: Instead of teaching “tradition” and “commands of men as doctrines,” true religion bases its doctrine on God’s Word, the Bible. (Matthew 15:6-9) Why? Because “all Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight.”—2 Timothy 3:16.
STRENGTHENS FAMILIES AND UPHOLDS HIGH MORAL STANDARDS: True religion trains husbands to ‘love their wives as their own bodies,’ helps wives to develop ‘deep respect for their husbands,’ and teaches children to ‘be obedient to their parents.’ (Ephesians 5:28, 33; 6:1) In addition, those entrusted with positions of authority must have exemplary morals.—1 Timothy 3:1-10.
Does any religion meet these standards? The book Holocaust Politics, published in 2001, says: “If more people practiced versions of what the Jehovah’s Witnesses preach and practice, the Holocaust could have been prevented and genocide would scourge the world no more.”
Indeed, in 235 lands, Jehovah’s Witnesses do not just preach the Bible’s moral standards—they live by them. We urge you to ask Jehovah’s Witnesses to help you learn what God requires of you so that you can worship him acceptably. Now is the time to act. Do not delay. The end of false religion is near!—Zephaniah 2:2, 3.

No, no, no....just because you claim to be a Christian it's not going to guarantee your place anywhere. Even Jesus said that many people would try to tell him they prophesied in his name, expelled demons in his name and Jesus said they would be workers of lawlessness and that they really never knew him. The bible even speaks of the demons knowing right from wrong, but they chose their own course of action - as we also have that choice- just because we know who Jesus is, doesn't mean we're guaranteed that salvation.
