We buffed the floor with towels, pinned our blankets on tight (then slept under the bed); polished down inside the drain; polished the bottom of our shoes and were given demerits for balls of cotton on our socks. Now days they cannot be screamed at; they run in running shoes and get 8 hrs sleep a night I wonder if any of that accounts for the casualties? God Bless You and The Southern People.

I really can't say today, I retired after 20+yrs in the US Army. I was drafted in Oct 1971 and back then we did. Usually a light punishment for this or that but it was mostly done to take up your time while other were getting off time.
Very often done in leadership schools for both Enlisted and Officer. Its was always the shower fixtures and water fixtures of the sinks and toilets especially if the were made of brass back then. You had to go beyound the normal to prove you were better and could pay attention to detail. Then the white gloves came out and you hope you brushed better than the other teams. Its was for competiton and it always worked, i'm better than you even my toilet shines !
But dang if it was the only tooth bush you had ~hahahah
I can say I never made a private do it, I did make a private guard the the flag pole during an entire weekend cause he was always late for work, not tolerated in the Army. You can't be hit, kicked or whatever, those are old stories of the late, late army, today is an all "Volunteer Army" and will all have rights, but the Army has total control of you 24/7, that is never in question !
A good sergent in the Army or US forces learns that the most important thing a troop has to hold unto is his "OFF TIME" Guarding the flag pole got his attention after that pay-day weekend, he never came in late again.
Its like your parents giving you down time in the corner when you have acted out with a negative attitude !

In Boot Camp in the Marine Corps, circa 1998, we had to once for punishment (lost a competition). Toothbrushes work wonders on grout.
Edit: To avoid confusion, we didn't use personal brushes.

I gave it a try once to get mildew out of the grout between tiles, but i found a t-shirt wrapped around my finger several times and soaked in bleach was far more effective. I lost a fingernail though. No worries, it grew back.

That type of punishment is no longer allowed as it promotes unsanitary living conditions for troops
