It sounds like this is an ongoing problem. If that is the case, then you need to switch her to a different, high quality food...something with a higher fiber content, and preferably less grains like corn. It would be easier to figure out what's going on if you give us a sample of her diet. You could also give her some green beans or a carrot everyday for added bulk. Cod liver oil should work as well. Constipation is also solved in a lot of pets if they start getting regular walks...this is essential. If she hasn't had a bowel movement in more than a couple days, she could have an obstruction and needs to see a vet asap.

You need to change her to a better brand of dog food,as it is not giving her what she needs. You could give her a tablespoon of pumpkin.Make sure that it is a non sugared or used for pie filling kind. You might get a book called"The Chihuahua Book for Dummies",It has a lot of Good suggestions. You might want to join a chihuahua group as there is a lot of Chihuahua people that could help you with the many problems and joys with Chihuahuas.

An unbalanced diet is the most common cause of constipation in dogs. Lack of fiber causes a build op of drying feces which becomes lodged in the intestines. The obvious cure is therefore increasing the fiber in the dogs diet (adding a teaspoon of bran or other high fiber food to the dogs standard meal is an easy option). It is also important to ensure a fresh supply of water is available. Most pet stores will stock a selection of mild natural laxatives which may produce results faster. There are however more serious causes of constipation, large portions of bone or ingested garbage can cause blockages in the intestines as can major worm infestation. If the constipation does not clear up within a day or two, or your dog shows signs of serious pain then you should take him to the vet for a thorough examination

You might want to try a different brand of food, maybe something a little bit better quality. If you do change the food remember to do it gradually over time mixing it with the old food. Mix a little bit of canned wet food into the dry. Your vet should have some good advice on this subject though.

Hive her a tablesppon of plain canned pumpkin. Works like a charm. I have been raising chihuahuas for over 8 yrs. Have owned them for over 35 yr.

Feed her very small amounts of very tasty wet food, and grate some cooked carrot into it. Add a drop of cod liver oil. Feed her 2 or 3 times a day.
Please don't use bran, not only can it have the opposite effect but it contains way too much potassium and will interfere with her uptake of calcium.

You can do it the same way as you would with a person. She probably needs more fats in her diet. It seems like she could also be dehydrated. Give her some more wet foods. You could start by giving a small dose of xlax or something. Just make sure it's really really small.

My small dog got constipated a couple of times and we gave him warm milk. It worked. I read somewhere that its a laxative for dogs. My husband also does this weird thing that works for humans too....he massages the bottom sides of the thighs. He has done this for our baby and it worked for both! Hilarious!

You say you have consulted w.a vet but you failed to ask this very question? Is it impaction or constipation? If its impaction, why not have the vet demonstrate how to do this yourself. You may want to call that vet and ask these very questions and get the right answers to the correct diagnosis.

If you took her to the vet, what did the vet say? Obviously there is a problem with her body or her diet and I cannot believe that you would be completely clueless if you did actually consult a vet numerous times.
