A traditional way is to bite a lemon-wedge, lick up some salt, and then take the shot.

To do it just hold the lemon-wedge in your non-dominant hand, then lick the base of your thumb on your other hand to get it wet and stick some salt to it. Hold the shot with the same hand.

Another way is to just drink it by the shot (very nice). It's good both room temperature or cold. If you're a fanatic for taste, colder tequila will go down smoother, but room temperature is the proper way to enjoy it. And if you have a $15-20 bottle of tequila, it shouldn't taste bad.
