Well at least you got one good answer.RW...All the people who answered picture tube, please stick to watching it and not diagnosing it.lol.It is a vertical problem and since you didn't mention a brand can't really help you.if it's a rca/ge,tuner connection on main board causes this symptom. Also,if it's a toshiba, that would be condensers in the vertical area...Good luck!

Contrary to the other answers, its NOT the picure tube...its the vertical circuit..I service tvs for 32 years...dont run it like this , the line can burn the phosphors off the front of the tube, resulting in a line on the screen after the set is fixed. Generally, its minor parts ,or an output IC, or bad solder connections...not a real big $$. Thanks

yeah, the picture tube probably went out. It is perfectly normal. If you have a tv for a while it will happen. It happened to me, and I changed the picture tube, around 8 years ago, and I do have a 27 inch Sony tv. Don't worry. It cost me only $150.

it is not likely to be the CRT-these are quite durable and thanks to modern manufacturing techniques they can last quite a long time-also if the line output or final anode sections of your tv failed you would not get a picture period. the chances are it is a vertical problem this is to say the tv is failing to produce a scan. this could come down to a number of things-but the main culprits would be the line-timebase or feild-output chip-either way you might be talking about £80-ish to repair it.

Have a professional diagnose the problem, but you probably need to get a new television because the cost to fix it is more than it's worth.

My TV did that. Something about the picture circuit board frying that would have been more expensive to fix than the TV was worth.
