My maltese a 12 lb. dog, was bit yesterday by a German Shepard. I don't have money for a vet. I put peroxide on the bite, but she is traumatized. What can I do to help her. She hasn't been herself since this happened yesterday. She can walk, but is just lying around, barely eating, but is drinking water alot. Please help me. Thank You K.B.

You should go to a vet to at least see if it's infected. It doesn't sound like she's doing too well. Most vets will see your dog for no more than $50, so that's not too expensive.

I'm sorry to hear about your little dog. She does seem to be doing poorly. I'm sure she is in shock and feeling quite shook up.
I'm not going to jump down your throat like some others here as I know it can happen that pet owners get in tricky financial situations. But, in this case it does sound like your little furbaby needs to see a doctor. I am positive that if you called around that you could find a vet who would be willing to treat her and allow you to pay them back in small portions. Vets are there to help and I am sure that they understand that some pet owners don't have tons of money lying around.
If worse comes to worse, try calling an animal shelter. A lot of vets volunteer their time for free to the shelter and may be willing to take a look at your dog. Explain your situation, I'm sure someone will be willing to help you out.
You could also ask a family member or a friend for a small loan.
In the meantime, it is best not to fuss too much around your little dog. If something is seriously wrong, then you could make it worse. Just make sure she is warm, comfortable, in a quiet place and has easy access to food and water.
A German Shepard is quite a rough opponent for a Maltese! I feel for you. I hope she feels better soon!

Where is the bite wound? Also, peroxide shouldnt be used on a puncture wound. Keep the area clean and if a puncture wound you want it to drain and heal inside out so use Furazone to treat the wound. Depending on where and how bad the bite was you could run into some serious problems. I hope this dog is up on its vaccinations. Clip the hair away from the wound or wounds so you can keep it clean easier and having a vet look her over is highly suggested. In the long run,,you may need vet assistance and w/a greater risk which will cost much more.

I would try and take her to the vet. Some vets with work with you with payment because of the severity of the problem. If she is traumatized, and eating very little, she might be in allot of pain. It is not fair to make her suffer. You might not have to pay for it. I would track down the German Shepard that did it, and make the owners of that dog pay for it. If it was their fault that is. Good luck.

All bites form another dog should be investigated by a vet, because they can be more serious than they appear. Severe infection [becoming apparent after 24 hours] can accompany even a mild bite. Preliminary cleaning of the wound can be done with warm water and hydrogen peroxide. Be gentle and make sure the dog does not bite YOU!

Pack the wound with antibiotic salve so that it does not become infected. If this is an area that the dog can lick , then bandage it so that she doesn't lick the salve off. She's probably pretty sore or give her a day or two to get over the bite.
Keep an eye on that would! If it starts to look infected, get her to a vet.

Dog bites often get infected. Your dog should see a vet and the vet will clean it out good and give you some antibiotics for the dog.

In most cases a dog's owner is liable for any injuries caused by the dog. Even if you don't know the owners, though, TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE VET. Bite wounds in general are prone to infection, and it sounds like your dog may have the start of one and is definitely in shock.

Most vets will let you set up a payment plan. It's better to pay $5 or $10 a month for the next few months than see your dog die.

Do you know the dog that bit her (or better question is do you know the owners)? If she was bitten by their dog, there's a good chance that they would be responsible for any vet bills.

How badly was she bitten? Where was she bitten? There's lots of questions that the vet will ask you when you call him to get his opinion. That's the best thing to do right now, call the vet and see what he says.

If you know the people who own the dog, be sure to get all their information regarding their dog, that the dog is up to date on all of the shots, especially rabies.

MAKE sure that she doesn't get an infection if the wound is really deep you might otta try to keep a bandage on the wound and make sure that you keep thw wound clean.
