...or someone who cherry picks the bits that suit them personally to live by, and disregards the bits they don't like or agree with as being metaphorical, allogoricall or some such?

I personally am an atheist, but I am more than happy to dish out the points to a believer who makes a good point. I like a good debate.

Oh and please don't pray for me or say I'll go to hell.

Hey Tom Your going to go to heaven even if you don't believe in God.

Don't worry about me praying for you or anything else. Praying is something people do who believe in a God that is not smart enough to know what is in their best interest. My God is so smart He/She doesn't need me or anyone else to wise Him/Her up.

As for the bible most of it is just nonsense.

The only way to use it is to cherry pick the little bit of truth that can be found in it.

About the only thing in the bible the roman catholics did not manage to twist was the story of the prodigal son. It tells us in no uncertain terms that God is unconditionally loving and would never judge or punish anyone for anything.

When the church noticed this over site they decided to spin the prodigal story as a story about forgiveness. Problem is if you actually read it with an open mind you see that the father never judges the sons actions in any way so no forgiveness was necessary or called for.

Love and blessings Don

Depends. A "cherry picker" may not be someone claiming to be a true Christian. They may just like parts of the Bible and use it more as a self-help book. A non-believer can do that. I can't speak for Christians but I was under the impression that a lot of them are taught by someone they trust (parents, preacher) that certain parts of the Bible are to be taken as metaphorical, allegorical, ect.. They end up being cherry pickers because they have learned that is the correct way to use the Bible, not because they are 'cheating'.

If you claim you strictly follow the Bible but you're making your own weird rules then that's ridiculous. I could say I follow the Bible since I've never killed anyone. I don't see anything wrong with disregarding the Bible completely as long as you're not calling yourself a "real" Christian.

Both are sins. One of unbelief the other being legalistic - looking for the laws yet also looking for loopholes. A Christian should accept the whole Word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

You forgot,it also has to be taken in context.
The whole bible has been cherry picked. Many gospels, books and texts proposed for the bible were rejected.
It was written by man as a way of controlling man.
Man made god,not the other way around

Well that's the problem with the bible isn't it...its supposed to be the word of god so people attribute a certain moral imperitive to it when they interpret something from it...and of course they have to interpret it since it was written by people, and imperfectly. I think if it really was the word of god, it would be all pictures or logical relations.

Hi I'm not a believer either, but if I had to decide which is worse I would have to say the cherry picker.

in case you retain on together with his words definite. while Jesus walked in this earth he gave us His physique and His Blood in and un-bloody sacrifice of the Mass. And He suggested, "try this in rememberance of Me." He replaced the blunders of the previous testomony, and blended the ten commandments into 2 great commandments. to love God specifically others and to love thy Neighbor as thyself. those 2 embody the ten He gave to Moses. He did no longer exchange them He in basic terms condensed them to make it greater straightforward for us people to comprehend. God bless you.
