I suppose if it was a really massive hernia it might be a problem, but generally speaking it's a routine procedure, and most people get out of hospital the day after the op.
Make sure you get a proper painkiller prescription when you leave hosptial. They may try to fob you off with co-codamol. Insist on Tramadol (or a similar opiate-based painkiller) if you can.
If you get tramadol make sure you also get a bottle of lactulose laxative (opiate based drugs really bung you up).

Depends on where the hernia is. In men it's usually an 'inguinal' hernia (groin area). We do them as day cases so not a major op. Mind you if it needs a mesh repair you may have to be an in patient. We are doing them laparoscopically. Obviously there are lots of other hernias. The word just means a weakness in the wall of a structure so therefore could be anywhere.

No its not a major operation more of a minor opp really. But you will have to take things very easy for a good 6 weeks after the opp

It's no easy ride,as a female the consequences of not having the op differs than for a guy. It's unfortunately one of those things that you've gotta do-try to see ur recovery period(mine lasted 4 days on my back & around 7 walking very carefully)as a holiday with the boredom thrown in for free!Pre rent yourself some dvd's,get a runner(for the fridge visits) and relax. It's not so bad....honestly,I'm sure you'll be totally fine!
Good luck!

Yes, anytime you have to be cut open is major. I had to undergo a bowel obstruction plus a hernia repair surgery, let me tell you something- it was no joke.

It is now considered to be a minor operation. I had mine done in 1979. I was a bit sore afterwards, but it soon cleared up. You will feel a different person once you have it done. Have no fears.

I had one last year. First op in my adult life - yeah it hurt when i walked although the painkillers helped - but the operation itself was fine. It's very straightforward, they're thinking of doing it in doctors surgeries soon - that how basic it is considered by many 'in the know'.
