Hanukkah gifts that would be appropriate for your Jewish friends are pretty much the same sort you'd shop for if they were Crhistian--books, jewelry, things like that.

But the holiday itself is quite interesting.

It commemorates a successful rebellion by the Jews against the Syrians, who were occupying their country at the time. The Syrians tried to force Greek culture on the Jews, and prohibited the practice of the Jewish faith.

Worst of all, the Syrians defiled the Temple in Jersusalem by sacrificing pigs on the altar, and pork was an unclean meat under the Law of Moses.

The rebellion was led by a family called the Maccabees, and when it was successfully completed, the first order of business was to cleanse and rededicate the Temple. To their dismay, they discovered that there was only enough oil to keep the sanctuary light burning for one day--but, miraculously, the oil lasted for eight days, giving time for more to be prepared.

This is also sometimes called The Festival of Lights or the Feast of the Dedication.

Hanukah is all about the Macbees and the war. THere are 8 nights of Hanukah because after the temple was destroyed there was only enough oil left for one day, but instead it burned for 8, thats Hanukah in a nut shell. You get a Jewish person any gift, there is no specific gift, the only reason Jews get presents on Hanukah is because the parents of Jewish kids don't want them to feel left out when all of the Christian kids get Chrstmas presents. Happy Hanukah!

One must not forget the oil at Chanukah. To eat latkes and donuts to remember that G-d didn't allow the light to go out. The oil is also a symbol of the Ruach Ha Kodesh. Also remember that the shammash candle is lifted up and is used to light all the other candles during the eight nights of the celebration. In that one light is the light of many. Think on these things.
