why do you believe in a single deity?
Sincere question-I have a friend who's that way and I don't feel comfortable asking her. We discuss religious ideas and she even tells me about some contradiction or error she's seen/heard of, but she would 'close up' if I ever asked her why she believes.

I am currently of "undetermined" faith, but here's the answer I think you're looking for:

It's possible that your friend believes in God, and believes that the Bible was the original word of God, but that through translation, some of the true meanings of that important history of the religion have been lost. If I ever return to Christianity, that would be my idea on the matter.

However, there are whole religions that have either additional passages that are included in the Bible or who have selected only excerpts from the Bible (such as the Jehovah's Witnesses). Just my personal beliefs, but I tend not to trust someone else's vision of what is or isn't important from that religious work. But many people do accept this.

And overall, the Bible is only a collection from a vast array of religious works available, that the Church set about in the early years to determine what was "important" and what was either a duplicate work, would be confusing, or just wasn't important. You can read a lot of these additional works at the Guttenburg project's Web site: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page.

Perhaps your friend wouldn't be as upset about your question, and would be glad to explain her personal reasons to you.

Jews and Christians were not the first to believe in a single deity though. And there's nothing wrong with believing in the God of the Bible and believing that the men who wrote it made mistakes. I mean, look at how often people make excuses for the mistakes they make, even concerning that God. Personally, I find it strange that one feels they have to place 100% faith in the Bible before their faith in the Biblical God can be considered valid.

The way I see it... If you dont believe the whole Bible then which part of the Bible do you know to believe? There is so much more to it all and some people have a harder time comprehending it. Just pray for her. God Bless... :)

the bible is a false doctrine nothing in it has ever been proved accurate. but believing in some thing other than your self can be a good thing as long as you more put faith in yourself than that other thing.
