Hebrews 11:1,6
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
All the arguements that one could make for faith, which there are many. Some are truthful, some futile
One could prove that Jesus physically walked on this earth which (if taken to a court setting could be proven), But God says that is not enough.
look at the verse up there hebrews 11:1 that is what it is.
Romans 10:17
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Faith is simply putting trust in something you can't know for sure....
There are two types of faith: subjective and objective.
Subjective is sort of like, Oh I believe this because I really really want to! Like, you believe that you will get the winning lottery ticket when you buy it even though the past twenty times you didn't win.
Objective faith is when you have facts that support something even if they don't implicitly prove it. Such as, you sit down on your chair at work without checking to see if someone loosed the bolts in the night because the past twenty times you sat down, no one had loosed them.
If you're talking religion, well all I can say is that if you believe in something, you had better have some objective faith, otherwise you're just asking for trouble.
ex. if you're a Christian, take an apologetics course
as for a faithless society.....why do you think we have so much crime, depression, suicide, ect.?

Faith is the belief in the existance of something that cannot be proven or is not seen. A lot of things take faith. Simply trusting someone takes faith.

What is faith?
The word "faith" in the Bible has several definitions depending on the context in which it is used. How a person believes can be defined as faith. A person is said to be strong in faith when he believes something in a very determined manner. On the other hand, a person is said to be weak in faith when his conviction is easily broken. The word "faith" in the Bible sometimes refers to this inner feeling or inner conviction in a person. Jesus was talking about the strength of personal conviction when in Matthew 14:31 He said, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
Saving Faith can be said to consist of three components:
Intellectual. Basic knowledge is required to have faith. True faith requires knowledge in things that are true. God is the best example. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one God. Believing otherwise is a false faith that cannot result in salvation.
Conviction. This is the inner emotional part of faith. Saving faith requires an inner conviction that the intellectual knowledge is true. Without conviction one cannot be saved.
Action. This is the outward component of saving faith. "Faith without works is dead." James 2:20. A person who hears the gospel and believes it to be true is still not saved unless he applies the gospel to himself. The lack of action proves his faith was incomplete. It was not true saving faith.
The word "faith" in the Bible sometimes means the object of one's faith. The gospel is often referred to as our faith or the faith. In other words, the gospel is the object, not the inner feeling.
Does faith come from God?

Faith is the belief in things unseen. Just because you cannot see God, does not mean that he does not exist. Faith is not a bad thing, it is good. It challenges us to look beyond what we see and imagine that maybe there really is more to life than what meets the eye. After all, as Solomon wrote, "God put eternity into the hearts of men." We have an inkling that there's got to be more than just this temporal life.

Faith is simply trusting in something.
Blind faith is trusting in something someone tells you without seeing any actual proof.
If I have faith in you, I trust you to be a good person to me.
If I have faith in God, I trust that he exists.
If I have faith in tomorrow being better than today, I trust that the future will only bring good things.
Etc.
Faith does not have to mean anythign religious at all, most religious faith is blind faith that gets many people killed anyways.

believing in something for absolutely no reason other then you want it to be true.
for example i want to be Brad Pitt so i have faith i am Brad Pitt.
faith is horrible. and can result in arriving at terribly evil conclusions.
you can believe that blacks are inferior out of faith, you can believe that Jesus was a homosexual out of faith, and you can even believe that Saved by the Bell was a good show out of faith.
Faith can do all these things but it cannot effect reality.

The bible give us the answer.
Hebrews 11: What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see.
The beginning point of faith is believing in God's character: He is who he says. The end point is believing in God's promises: He will do what he says. When we believe that God will fulfill his promises even though we don't see those promises materializing yet, we demonstrate true faith. (see John 20:24-31)
