I answer the phone for a living, and often, when the conversation is over, they just hang up. I'm not sure if they still have questions, or want to add detail, or even have a frield talk. So, I listen for a couple second more, and hear the phone disconnect. Not only has this happened at my job as an admin assist, but also at my job as a supervior, or even on personal phone calls, or when people are calling me about bills and whatnot. Does anyone else find this...irritating?

I always say bye, or later, or something to end the conversation

Yes!!! I work in an office where I talk to customers on the phone scheduling service, etc. and it drives me crazy!! I will usually get a "thank-you" but very seldom a bye to tell me the conversation is over. And, because I'm anticipating the "bye", about half the time I say "bye" to a customer, they have another question!

I can't stand it. If anything, if it's a business-type call the person should at least say "Ok, thank you, goodbye" That way you can both hang up at the same time. I make all my calls on a cell phone (I have no other phone) and it takes awhile before you can tell if the line is dead. Sometimes I can't tell if it was a "dropped call" or what. It's annoying but what can I do.

I say "bye" at the end of personal calls and "goodbye" at the end of business calls. It shows that you acknowledge that the conversation is finished. I think it is rude and sometimes confusing (like you mentioned, waiting to hear the phone disconnect) if "bye" or "goodbye" is not said at the end.

whenever i'm on personal calls, we always say bye before hanging up. when i'm on the phone at work with a customer, i usually say thank you and hang up, or thank you and good bye. i really can't stand it when people don't at least say something to end the conversation, it's rude.

My guess is that they treat their conversations with official offices as only a means to an end, and they think very little of the person they talk to. I don't have such a job, but I'm sure that it would bother me, but try not to take it too seriously.

Yes I find it incredibly rude to just hang up. I understand sometimes people are busy but come on, it takes half a second to say "bye" or "Seacrest Out" or something.

Its just like they do on TV. Have you noticed that when you watch tv that nobody say's "bye" anymore when you watch tv and they are ending the conversation. I think that is who they are getting there cue from. From watching the TV. It is because they do it. I first noticed when I watched 7th Heaven and other TV shows. Hardly anybody say's bye anymore. They just hang up.

Hmmm - I always say "bye", and everyone I know does, too.
The only hang-up person I know of was an ex who used to hang up on anyone when he didn't like what they were saying, and I always thought that was very childish.
