Good question. I think it's barbaric that race horses are destroyed because they break a leg. However my brother is one of the starters at a race course and of course has to help deal with injured horses. He says that they are so destressed and in agony that is the kindest thing they can do. Have you ever seen a six foot muscle man cry! He does every time he has to help deal with the slaughter of a horse.
I also believe that the cost is a huge factor for owners who are left with expensive bills and no income as the horse will never race again. Consider this, my dog broke his leg in the summer, it has cost almost £1500 pounds so far to fix him, imagine he was a horse.!

This is not always the case, it depends on the severity of the break and where exactly it is on the leg. Many times they will be put to sleep becasue it will take a very long time to heal and it is impossible to keep the horse off the leg during this time.

horses get put down because , take for example when they are lame, the horse is useless, as without one of four legs the horse cannot walk. So if a horse gets a broken leg, it is unhealable and the horse cant walk. so horses unfortunatly get put down

because it is not possible to immobilise the leg of a horse in order to heal the break.

Because horse's legs don't mend cleanly, and trainers assume that because a horse will limp, it's obviously no good to man nor beast. Wrongly.

They don't know their leg is broken, and keep trying to stand up, run, and trot around, thus aggravating the injury, sometimes leading to infection.

Because they are not fit to race anymore, and are a burden to the owner. I know it's really cruel and I think they should be allowed to have a happy retirement, after all they've earned their owners a lot of money in their lifetime.
