I'm looking into maybe a major in Religion but I have a few questions: what kinds of jobs after college are offered in this field besides a pastor? Would it be better for me to go to a private college or university for this degree?

I'm thinking of getting my Doctorate in Religious education. I plan on teaching religion at a high school or college level. I'm not sure what else you can do with the degree. I attend a private college now and most likely will go to a private school for my Doctorate also.

A degree in religion does not qualify for any ministry. You can do a degree in comparative religion majoring in Buddhism. If you want to pastor in those denominations that ordain women you generally attend a seminary or Bible College the denomination recognizes. The church I pastored in had no education requirement, but I had in fact attended Fuller for a M.Theol and had two other master's degree as well. Seminarians serve in many capacities besides pastoring: church administration, childhood education, senior services, youth ministry, music ministry, outreach, missions, etc. I take it you haven't talked to your own pastor about this? That's where you'd want to start because you'll your pastor's recommendation for most seminaries.

Unfortunately, your question is a little too vague. Are you talking about being a Theology major in a seminary? In that case your job options might be limited.

If you are talking about majoring in Comparative Relgion or a similar scholastic discipline, you can get a job teaching in a college or university, if you have a Master's or higher.

Depends on what exactly in religion you wish to excel; Psychology of religion, history of religion, sociology of religion or cultural practices. Chose a specific religion and learn the language and you have a scientific/literary ability to translate and be a go-between. Get a psychology degree and you can be a councelor for any religious-minded person. Take it farther and you can open your own clinics and support groups for emotional uplifting and personal enlightenment.

It depends, on what religion, position, and capacity you are looking for. Youth pastoring, pre-school education, Christian school education, theolog, missionary, the list goes on. More info would be helpful for answering this question.

Not a religious major, but many of my good friends were.

You can be a teacher. Other than that majoring in religion is a waste of time and money.
