Hey now.Nothing to be ashamed of.It just takes practice.Maybe you can get a friend to go with you on the highway.Start off slow, put on your 4-way blinkers if it makes you more comfortable.
Some states require that if driving slower than posted speed limit.
Perhaps joing a driving school class may help.
Everyone at first has some fear, but if you work at it,you gradually get over it.Best of luck.

Don't be embarrassed at least you are searching for good advise and as for your husband comment, unfortunately he is mirror imaging Americans in that things are just not quick enough. Take your time when driving, continue to read DMV driving guide and continue to ask questions from people you believe who are responsible drivers. Also you might want to practice your driving during the hours of the day or weekends when the roads are less congestive. As a driver listen to yourself first; then tell your husband to put on his seat belt and sit back and enjoy the ride. Or get a cab.

The more practice you have on the freeway, the less afraid you’ll be. Its all in the mind. Start off slowly when there is not much traffic, once or twice a week, with a friend with you. Then start going on the freeway more often and with more traffic. Eventually you will overcome your fear. OR try contacting a local driving school and see what they can do for you.

Practice, Practice and more Practice.
Try driving on freeways and at higher speeds during periods when there is less traffic. This will build your confidence.
As you get more confident, go out at busier times of the day.

Yes, take a friend that you trust with you. Not your husband. He'll likely make you more nervous. Also, you could take a couple of classes. They'll take you on the highway, you'll have an instructor with you, and after a while, you'll be okay.
Seriously, the more you drive on the highway, the more you'll be okay with it.

California drivers are scary! Way too aggressive. Just bite the bullet and get out there!
