would these work for a good varmit rifle and how far can i expect them to travel and still have stoping power

It would appear that they are generally good for varmits up to about 50 yards (for accuracy on that size animal), however for stopping power, it'll stop a varmit as far as you can see to hit it.

However, the 9mm shot-shell load works wonders also for those close-in varmits.

If you had to buy one gun for self-defense and varmits, it's probably a good choice, but perhaps a shotgun would be better.

What kind of 9mm carbine are you talking about? Universal M-1 Carbine? Hi-Point 995 9mm Carbine? VULCAN ARMS V-94 9mm Carbine? IMI Uzi 9mm Carbine? CX4 Carbine 9mm?

The 9mm has never been known for its accuracy, they are a close range self defense weapon.
For varmits I would consider a .22 mag or .17 HMR, you will have a lot better accuracy and range.

a friend of mine who recently completed his tour of duty in Iraq says that over there, the weapon of choice for hunting varmint is the Browning .50cal machine gun mounted atop an armored Humvee...

THE NINE NEVER DID WELL IN RIFLE VERSION
IT IS A HANDGUN CARTRIDGE FOR CLOSE WORK
