There is actually a debate in the Talmud on this subject that results in the conclusion that it would have been better if G-d had never created man. :)

The reason though it is said that G-d did it was out his desire to give. Meaning that G-d had the desire to bestow good on something so he created man so he could give him that good.

the reason as a result that life is so hard and sometimes looks unfair and cruel is because our nature is that we best appreciate something if we had worked for it. So by life being hard we can say we have earned the gift that G-d wants to give us.

as to why we were created this way I have no Idea ;)

G-d created man as an ultimate act of love and giving. Not having any wants or needs it could not be for his benefit.
