"having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people"

It means avoid and exclude people who aren't morally superior like you.

Kind of inflates ones head, huh?

“Having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power.” (2 Timothy 3:5 - The Bible has the power to change lives for the better. (Ephesians 4:22-24) Yet, many today use their religion as a screen behind which they carry on unrighteous activities that displease God. Lying, stealing, and sexual misconduct are often condoned by religious leaders. Many religions preach love but support warfare.

This is the fruitage of centuries of apostasy from true worship. These conditions have developed because people who have professed to be religious have ignored what God’s Word really says. They have proved false to the power for good that true godly devotion can have in one’s life.

The "form" and "power" of "godliness" are intended to be inseparable. You cannot have a form of godliness and deny that the power is of God. A

There are certain groups out there that twist scripture for personal gain and greed. You must read the previous verses to grasp the context of "And from such people turn away." The "such people" are lovers of self (selfishness), lover of money (greedy), boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents and authority, ingrates, unloving, unforgiving, etc. (see 2Tim 3:1-5)

People who claim to be of God and exhibit theses traits should be avoided. They are poisons and cancers of the Body of Christ. remember, Christ was most harsh with religious leaders who appeared to be "Godly" on the outside, but were greedy and selfish and self-righteous.

It zeros in on the self righteous.
People that are wicked but give the appearance of being godly or holy, such as the many false religious leaders of today.

Divine guidance and power is not really in them. They are the blind leading the blind.
Mat 15:14 Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."

having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

In the Greek the word "Form" comes from the word Morphosis, which means having the outward appearance of. So in the context of the rest of the verse, the afore mentioned people will have an outward appearance of being godly, but in truth they will not have faith. They will be the whitewashed tombs spoken of in Matthew 23:27. They will be Pharisees and Hypocrites, because they will not have true faith, which comes from God alone. Avoid these people, lest you become one. In fact we all are these people, and Christ alone fullfilled this, so being baptized into Christ, we accomplish this.

People having a form of Godliness (religious) but denying the power of God (Holy Spirit & gifts of and the atoning Power of the Cross).

What Jesus did to atone for our sins is sufficient for our everlasting life to us who believe. To the world it is foolishness, but to us redeemed by His Blood, the power of God. The Holy Spirit is power from on High given to us who are born of God.

This refers to ppl who act Godly, but arent, a false form of Godliness, that most of all in the church and out ,are very familiar with. First off, not everyone using the title Christian is a Christian, and not every church claiming to be Christian is a Christian church. devil gets in and plays with it all. and God tell us He will not KNOW this ppl on judgement day. He tells us by their fruits (actions) we will know them. If they dont love God, and arent leading an obedient holy life, then they arent Christian.
PPl can confess God and pretend to act all holy and religious, but it doesnt mean they are Gods. WE must manifest Gods power to live a holy , obedient life, or what power are we showing? These ppl tolerate immorality even within their homes and churches, and even teach that a person may keep sinning and that grace will cover it all. No, sin leads to death. Grace will not cover deliberate, willfull sin. NO. We cant continue to practice sins and still expect to inherit the Kingdom of God. Doesnt work that way, and that is what this is referring to. God calls us to live holy, obedient and righteous lives for Him and His cause to lead others to salvation. and to stop sinning and repent and let God give us all a new heart of love to change the world. Many wont accept that, but it is our job to keep telling this message and not worry about rejection. Jesus stood boldly and told the truth. He didnt tiptoe, so as not to offend anyone. He sure never said keep sinning and grace has you covered. He said sin leads to death. disobedience leads to death, but obedience leads to blessing. This is a great question, and I wish more thought about this one. Its easy to dismiss whenyou dont plan to stop sinning. Counting on grace is blasphemy. Why did Jesus die, so we could keep sinning. God forbid, was His response when asked.. But, we no longer have to blood atone for our sins, thats what changed. great question

It means that you know Gods power but you do not live it or walk in it. In the Bible Matthew 7:22 , they knew how but faked it and it was not pleasing to God. (I think anyway)

I am not completly positive but I think it means that if you act all godly than, and deny its power, thats bad,and that you should avoid people like that if you aren't already like that.

5For [although] they hold a form of piety (true religion), they deny and reject and are strangers to the power of it [their conduct belies the genuineness of their profession]. Avoid [all] such people [turn away from them].

You are not to hang out with people who are not believers like you. unequally yoked.
