I have an 11week old maltipoo puppy. We are crate training him and that is nice in the evenings, etc. He seems to keep his crate dry from 1am-6am no problems...However, when I leave for work he pees and poops but when the dog walker arrives at 12:15 each day his crate is wet. Is his bladder to young to hold it? Am I doing something wrong...how long does it take for housebreaking? I am so careful with him but he still has (1) accident per night in the house-UGH! The crate is small enough for him, he never poops in it-so I'm thinking he just can't hold it yet. Thoughts???

Keep in mind he is a baby

Is his crate too big? It should only be large enough for him to turn around in and lay back down.
After feeding him in the morning are you giving him ample time to poop before you leave? If not, get up a little earlier and feed him a little earlier.
Don't feed him again, or leave food or treats in the crate after he poops after morning meal.

As for water...that's debatable amongst trainers and vets. He's a small dog. Could potentially dehydrate. Me, I'd put up with a wee bit of pee and leave him a little water during the day. Not a lot though.

You still have a couple of weeks to go before housebroken in my humble opinion. Have you tried puppy pads to keep the mess down?

My 13 week labradoodle is just now housetrained, but will make a mess if I'm not quick enough picking up on his signal to go out.

Good luck

So just to understand, the dog is in a crate for roughly 6 hours during the day? To directly answer your question: Yes, for an 11 week old toy dog, this is too long. The most he would really be able to hold it during the day right now is under 3 hours. Night is different because they are sleeping and dont realize they have to go. During the day, they are often awake so when the urge hits, they need to be let out.

They do not have full bladder/bowel control until at least 6 months of age.

He needs to be taken out every 2 hours, after waking, eating/drinking, and playing.

Make sure you feed him on a schedule, 3 x a day.

Do not give up! Any accidents he has is due to lack of supervision! Check for signs he needs to potty, like sniffing the ground, whining, ducking behind a couch, worried look on face, stopping play suddenly and circling/sniffing, etc. Take him out immediately if you see those signs!

Be sure to clean the spots he potties in with an enzymatic cleaner like Pet Force from http://www.frrco.com/121668 to deter him from using the same spot over and over.

Also, get him neutered. This will help end "marking" behavior.

The problem might be that the crate is too large for him. If a crate is large enough then the puppy will poop/pee in one area and then sleep in another. If this is the case then you need to make a divider so that he only has enough room to sleep.

at 11 weeks, he probably needs to go out every 2-3 hours. we have a 5 month old who is just getting to where she can hold it all night (at least we havent found any accidents if she is having one - but we have shag carpeting so its harder to tell!)

Does he get to go potty before bed, and also right away in the morning? If not, I would try it!
