Michele Castle has written an article about your question (see link below):
"Windows XP comes in several versions, the most popular for desktops and laptops being Home and Professional. The Home version is generally intended for personal use, while the Professional version is for business use. However, the two differences between the two versions sometimes necessitate home users choosing the Professional version. Likewise, the Professional versus is not always needed for small businesses.
In early 2007, Microsoft is expected to release Windows Vista, the next generation of Microsoft Windows. Once Microsoft releases Windows Vista, Microsoft will only provide support for Windows XP Home for two years. Because it is a business product, Windows XP Professional will receive seven years of support, extending the useful life of a Windows XP Professional computer significantly.
, I recommend that you purchase Windows XP Professional instead of XP Home. Windows XP Home offers the following features:
* New interface - the redesigned interface is easier to use than in previous versions
* Windows Media Player - find, play, and organize your media files
* Windows Messenger - communicate and collaborate with instant messaging, video conferencing, and application sharing
* Wireless capabilities - automatically configure a wireless network
* Multitasking - run multiple applications simultaneously
* Internet Connection Firewall - free firewall to protect your computer from attacks
* Multi-language support - enter text in any language and run any language version of Windows applications
In addition to the features available in Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional (compare prices) also offers the following:
* Remote desktop - access your computer from another Windows computer remotely
* Offline files and folders - access remote files and folders even when disconnected from the network
* Dual processor support - use two CPUs instead of one
* Greater access control - restrict access to files, folders, and applications
* Designed for business environemnts - administration, group management, software installation, and more simplify the administration of a network
* Multi-language user interface - change the language of the dialog boxes, help files, and more"
Windows XP Professional is much more stable than Windows XP Home. I have had both and Windows XP Home used to crash all the time on my computer, windows XP professional rarely crashes on me.However if you have waited this long to get Windows XP maybe you should wait a little longer and get Windows Vista when it comes out read this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/editions/default.mspx

You nonestly do no longer desire the professional version in case you're unlikely to create networking around the homestead and cope with it from an IT stand element. surfing the internet, staring at some video or handling your photos on there or appearing some artwork at homestead does not call in for a extra costly OS. save the money to get an incredible on the spot keyboard and mouse or a webcam in case you decide on.

XP Pro allows you to join a domain. That's the main difference. I think it runs smoother.
