The Bible is often declared as the word of God mainly because they are told by religious authorities that it is. It is called legitimization. If you want people to believe in anything, you have to legitimize it. In a historical context, declaring that the Bible was the word of God was a fear tactic to keep people obedient to the Church and also to the King or ruler of the time. It allowed the ruling class to keep their subjects in line by the threat of death or severe punishment if one questioned their authority, to go against the King or the Church was the same as going against God himself. In order to have that in place you have to make the Bible God's Word as the ultimate end-all authority. But keep in mind that this is solely a constructed belief by those in power. To this day people say that the Bible is God's Word for the same reason: you cannot question God so you cannot question the Bible. It is a cop out to having to explain the contradictions in the Bible, if you ask someone a probing question they cannot answer they will most likely tell you that you do not have faith and therefore until you do you won't understand the answer. Of course, in most instances they themselves do not have the answer, so they use their faith to duck out of the question and try to make you feel inferior or unworthy. This is why beliefs like this still exist to this day. Ask a religious figure why incest was acceptable and how come Cain did not know his wife's name or met her in a strange land if we all came from Eden. Ask why Elijah prayed to punish 40 children who made fun of his bald head and God summoned a bear to kill them all. See what answers you get, if any.

If those half-civilized people who wrote the stories in the Bible, could return to life, they would be laughing like hell at the silly fools who accepted these fairy tales as truth.
These stories were written at a time when only the most sophisticated knew how to read or write.
They were written purely for entertainment. They had no idea that the earth was round, and no idea that anyone could learn anything from reading these silly stories.

I don't know why anyone would follow the word of man to begin with.
As a mystic I believe in a personal expeirence of God/Divinity. No book or religious leader is needed.

most non believers have never done enough research to understand that the bible is not just one long book , but actually over sixty, written at different times, some hundreds of years apart and some at around the same time. this is important to comprehend because none of these books contradict each other in the slightest. which is why is it actually easy to believe that the words written were inspired by God, the author.

I believe it is because the bible, the books of it anyway, were written by men and superintended by the holy spirit. It is like an author having a ghost writer. The author still gets the credit.

Definition: God's written Word to humankind. God used some 40 human secretaries over a period of 16centuries to record it, but God himself actively directed the writing by his spirit. Thus it is inspired by God. A large portion of the record is made up of actual pronouncements made by God and details as to the teachings and activities of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In these we find statements of God's requirements for the earth to completion. To deepen our appreciation for these things, God also preserved in the Bible a record demonstrating what happens when individuals and nations listen to God and work in harmony with his purpose, as well as the outcome when they go their own way. By means of this reliable historical record God acquaints us with his dealings with humankind and thus with his own marvelous personality.
